Drum Brake's (I think) - Fixed

Okay, so I was driving the other day and heard a "clunk" and then a nice metal grinding noise from my rear drivers wheel. I had to drive it home with clenched teeth. I'm guessing my pad's, or something in my drums has gone kaput!!!

Here is the problem, I have been driving all day to find a place that sells at 36mm Socket for the axle nut, and breaker bar etc to no avail. I've realised that by the time I have bought all the equipment and a jack and axle stands that I may aswell send it to someone who knows what there doing. Ive priced the tools to do it to around $260+ that's just to get the thing opened up. And then I still need to diagnose the problem.

My keep alive book and youtube videos probably isn't going to cut it. I know I can use all the tools again but it's probably a bit too big of a job for a noobie.

I live in Melbourne in Windsor (St Kilda). Firstly I need to know if anyone knows any one close that will do a proper job, other wise it's upto Volkspower I go. Then comes the next issue, I don't want to do major damage with the grinding so is there anything I can do to relieve this to drive 30mins up the road?

its most probably the clip that holds the brake shoe on...
a thin round bit that can't really do any damage...
it gets jammed under the brake shoe and rubs on the drum and makes a terrible noise...

why car makers actually use something like these is weird..
the pin and clip are worth a couple of dollars and the spring may be rattling round too...
so, the parts aren't expensive....
and not hard to replace/renew...

best to get someone with all the gear to fix it...
won't take long either....
may be a good time to get the 2 pins and clips on the other side replaced too...

hardest bit is getting the large nut off..

I bought the socket for like $24. was a big fat high impact 6 sided socked for 1/2 inch drive. Most recommend 3/4 inch.

Then use a normal sized breaker bar, but put a bit of steel pipe over it.
should cost toooo much!

Loosen the nut before jacking the vehicle.
Put the handbrake on, thenput your foot on the brake pedal while pulling up on the handbrake. This should get it on nice & tight.
Chock the wheel(s) for good measure.
Then try undoing the nut.
The 1/2 " drive has too much flex and is likely to break under that load. You will be putting hundreds of foot pounds on it.
Best to use 3/4" drive stuff.
I bought a 3/4 drive socket set on special at supercrap for about $120.00. Never looked back.
Use the money you would spend at the VW shop on some tools, break even, and your profit is the knowledge you gain!

Don't forget to back off the shoes before trying to remove the drum.

Many of Us already have the tools...
and Use them now & then....
and know how to use them...
undoing the brake shoes - You need to know how...

Chris, I tried a 1/2 inch drive and snapped My new Sidchrome breaker bar off trying to undo the nut..
it needed 3/4 drive with 6 foot [two meters] of water pipe...
and jump up and down on it...

as You will also need jack stands....
trolley jack... etc

Is there no one on here to help this guy??

I bought the socket (1/2 inch) and paid the local mechanic 20 bucks to loosen the bolts on both sides. The socket cost about 28 bucks from auto one. Suggest you get a club card form the auto one site before you go here. It should get you a 10% discount.

Don't forget to get new clips to hold the big nuts on when you reassemble.

Okay so I went to the garage, they pulled apart the rear drums and they were in tip top condition. He seems to think its the gearbox or clutch. We backed it out of the garage and it drove home without a hitch then coming to my drive it started grinding again, but then stops and won't do it for a few mins. I've taken an audio recording being the audio geek I am, i'm literally driving forward and backwards very slowly.

Very difficult to hear...

could be Your gearbox mainshaft bearing??

doesn't sound good...

sounds the same in forward and reverse???

It's the same both ways!

It's booked into Volkspower next week, I'll let you know how it goes!!! I can hear the sound in my sleep, urghh! Praying it won't be too much money before xmas, I'd rather have my bug though haha!! :)

Back from the hospital!! Apparently the backing plate was bent!! Amazing, the other garage didn't spot it!! :crazy:

I should have stuck to my guns haha!!
