Parts required for my 12v conversion?
AyeBee - November 29th, 2011 at 08:33 PM

After reading a number of websites, forums etc looking for that definitive list of what I need to convert my 1964 1200 6 Volt Beetle to 12 volt, there seems to be a lot of varying thoughts.

Here's what I seem to be able to figure out I need for my bug (note: I intend on just using the 6volt starter, and have a 12v radio already to install in glovebox)

- 12v Alternator (with internal regulator)
- Alternator Stand
- Alternator strap
- Alternator backing plate
- New 12v style pulley for alternator
- 12v Coil and condensor
- 12v Horn
- Voltage reducer (or similar) for wipers, or 12v motor
- 12v Flasher canister
- 12v Bulbs (everything including headlights and dash)
- New fan belt
- 12v choke (although not sure where I'd find one for a 28 PICT-1)

Stuff I'm not sure about

- Fuel tank sender unit?
- Fuel Pump?
- New fuses?

Anyone care to help by adding stuff I may have missed or eliminating parts above I don't need before I go ahead and start collecting all these parts?

Cheers,

Andy

Fuel pump's mechanical.Unless you have changed it.

I recall reading somewhere though I may need a different one due to clearance issues once I install an alternator stand instead of having just the generator? And every alternator/12 volt conversion kit I see on the internet (not that I'm buying one of those), seems to have one included. Which is why Im puzzled?

May need a new fan hub.
Won't need a condenser They are not voltage sensitive
Yes to fuel pump, change to the alternator style and pushrod, esp on a 1200

Choke element and fuel gauge will burn out eventually, altho the fuel gauge can last a long time. Don't think the choke element is available in 12v but possibly could get it rewound.

And don't forget you'll need a 12V battery

Thanks Matt - found a place in the states last night (pacific customs) that sells a 12v choke element for the 28 PICT-1 , didnt actually think Id find one.

Depends which fuel pump you have and what alternator you use.
Alot of the new generator style fuel pumps will work with alternators still.

Are you sure the carb is a 28pict-1?
Cos they use the 12volt size choke units, its the 28pict that use the smaller one.
I can vouch for that when I accidentally put a 6volt choke unit in my 71 superbug, they dont work on 6 volt for long without glowing in the dark and when we converted a friends 66 the 12volt choke fitted straight in

otherwise you could have a 28pict-1 carb bottom with a 28pict top.
Does it have the triangle choke diaphragm cover with 3 screws or the long cylinder type?

Its the triangle one with 3 screws Joel.

Beetles that had alternators originally , came with a Fuel pump with an OFFSET base...
so it doesn't touch the alternator..

I have seen alternators with a bit ground down so they don't touch the pump...
putting a piece of rubber in between them doesn't work... lol

If Your engine starts first time every time..
Your starter motor will last for some time [usually]

Here's an older pic of my 1200 -

Bottom half says 28 PICT-1.

So you saying that a 12v one should just fit straight in there?

Am looking at this one -

It would pay to measure the OD of your choke unit just to be sure but yes that carb should take the later 12 volt style like the one you linked.

All my VW engines and carbs are in storage at my oldies place but if someone on here cant measure a 12 volt one for you I'll be able to tomorrow arvo.

AyeBee - December 1st, 2011 at 09:18 PM

If someone could measure one, that'd be great.

1303Steve - December 1st, 2011 at 09:20 PM

Hi

You will need to fit a spacer under the carb because the accelerator linkage will touch the alternator. The 6 volt horn may last for a while and make interesting noises

Steve

Ah, thanks Steve!

43mm is the OD where it sits in the carb of the later 12volt style.

AyeBee - December 2nd, 2011 at 07:55 PM

Awesome, much appreciated Joel.

Joel - December 3rd, 2011 at 01:22 PM

No worries.

Just for laughs here's how you don't fit a 12 volt unit to the earlier 28pict carbs

Yep, I see the problem, rusty screws. :dork:

AyeBee - December 3rd, 2011 at 07:10 PM

Yeah, that screw at the top doesn't seem very secure ;-)

Thanks to all those that replied both here and in PM. Parts are now ordered - everything except all the bulbs!

Cheers.

68AutoBug - December 5th, 2011 at 01:27 PM

actually the two LH screws are jammed against the body of the choke and not screwed right in..

Bottom RH side is sitting on the edge of the body..

odd that the screws are rusted... must be in the USA or UK
where everything rusts... lol
