Hello everyone. I just bought a 1970 beetle for $500 of this bloke. He says the motor is an 1800? Could this be right. How do I tell and could anybody
tell me where to find the vin at? I found the model plate in the boot compartment.

Probably a 1500 single port at a guess.... it may have had work done to it but you cant really tell by looking at it. It looks pretty stock to me. The engine number is on the block just under the generator stand.

Oh sorry vin/chassis number is under the back seat on top of the tunnel at the back where it flares out.

You will also need to get the missing bits of engine tinware replaced before you drive too much or you will cause damage to the engine by letting the
hot air from the exhaust in to the engine bay.

It started life as a 1500sp but it's probably 1600 now.
The 1600 cylinders bolt straight in and are cheaper and more readily availble.
Obviously its not on the road being a $500er?
But just so your aware like that it will cook real quick with the heater hoses missing, the breast plate tin missing and the generator installed
wrong.
The bloke said it came out of a VW Truck and is 1800. Also what do you mean the generator is wrong, Joel?
hmmm. Still can't find the vin number. Got the engine number alright though.
vin/chassis number is under the back seat on top of the tunnel.....just in front of the gearbox coupler access plate

THe generator needs to be turned 90degrees clockwise.

Yep, got the vin number, engine number and model plate. All is okay.

When the gen isn't aligned properly the slot doesnt line up to do this.
Just need to remove the 4 mounting bolts and turn it around to the next holes so the Terminals are about 2oclock.
Thanks for the fantastic help Joel and everyone else. I found the engine code from [url=http://www.type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm[/url] and it appears to be a 1600 as my engine number starts with AD.
as for the claim that its an 1800, it is possible.
I have a spare engine that had single port heads and the case was bored for 92mm barrels and with a 1600 crankshaft stroke that equals 1800 (ish).
However, 1800 breathing through single ports is a bad combination, certainly not the basis for a performance engine.
Yours is a single port, 69 mm crank, could be the same.
