Hi guys,

Have been looking at some pictures lately and it has me thinking - what body is my car

I have bought it as it is.So somebody may have done a body change at some point or would they have changed the deck lid,bonnet and guards? The guy I bought it from said the work had already been done.

It's registered as a 70 but the deck lid and bonnet look like a 60's.
I have noticed that I have horn grills but have not seen them on other 70's models.
I have 50/50 tail lights (noticed a lot of 68 models have reverse lights -does this mean mine should have them?

Not sure what else I should look at to try to see some differences. -size of the glass etc

Looks like a 1970 to me. What is the chassis number.
All of the bolt on bits are from earlier '60s. (Guards, lights etc)
Reversing lights didn't come out until around '71/'72.

Body looks like a 1969-70 model - large glass and lockable fuel flap - late doors with one piece windows..

Guards- tail lamps- bumpers and bonnet from pre-1968 models
tail lamps were used from 1962 to 1967..
rear engine lid pre 1964 - 64 had wider licence plate lamp housing

Yep as above, late body with early guards, bonnet and decklid (with the matching aprons fitted). The tail lights are '62-'67. 50/50's are 50% red and 50% yellow, they are very rare and are pretty well Australia only '60-'61, dimensionally they are similar size to an oval's snowflake tail light.

69-70 with early front and rear valance, bonnet and guards. (fuel flap gives it away)

Yeah, 68-70 but with earlier stuff as others have said.

To possibly narrow down further... 68-69 had a finger dent to open the fuel filler flap, while 70's had a remote release that they changed for 1971 and later.

Went similar look with Jezebel with the 6V guards and US spec headlights (but kept the later bonnet), W shape engine lid and snowflake tail lights... only wish she was as pretty as yours !!!

68 had finger dent, 69 to 72 was cable release then 73 back to finger dent

Where abouts is the interior light? is it straight above the B-pillar or in the middle above the door?

Also front heater outlets will determine if its 69 or 70.
69 had cables with levers under the dash, 70 didnt.

the aussie factory used alot of carry over parts to get rid of them.
Correct re. the fuel door cables.

69s had a cable operated front heater outlet with the lever below the dash but that was dropped in 70 for some reason.
And the interior light was moved across in june 70.

1500 Semi-auto bugs were fully imported from Germany so they don't share Aussie built specs exactly to the T but are fairly close.

Also accounts for delays in model upgrades as well.
A mate also had a 1500 Semi-auto, bought from the original lady owner.

It was on the books as being as 69 and the logbooks showed she took delivery in feb 69 but it still had an old 118 chassis number and other 68 specs- old speedo, finger open door flap, 2 tone wheels etc etc

But then mine is on the books as being a 75 for the same reasons even though its all 74 spec.

Cos she went and bought it brand new well into 69 and the dealership sold it to her as being a 69 and so the rego papers also say 69.

Same deal with mine, bought new from Greg Cussak Motors 17th of Jan 75 so it's listed as being a 75 even though its build date is 9/74 and has a 134 vin.

Thanks for the replies. - I saw this car at the nationals this year and loved it - i was looking at getting one with aero guards as I had them before - I found a guy selling one at the same time - Nice car (Steve Carters old yellow one) without engine and was tempted but the wife might not have been impressed with me buying a car with no engine and it sitting around for while until i sorted something out, anyway thanks for your kind comments - I'm loving (out in it today)

I have to open the fuel cap by finger (no cable or release inside the car)

No heater so no outlets carpeted over.

This is something I have been thinking about for a while.

Would I be able to change my head lights to the new beetle ones? (seen heaps for sale on the bay)

No Idea of dimensions or anything (and of course my indicators are located inside the headlamp currently)

just a thought at this stage and wondering what it might look like

Wow - I like that chassis number... less than 200 different from mine !!! (March 70 Aussie build)

It's a very sweet ride as is - so just keep enjoyin it I reckon.

I reckon the car looks great the way it is, early looks but with anti burst door locks.

A good headlight upgrade seeing as you already have early headlights is to fit some 911 headlight glasses, they fit straight in and look much more modern.

I have looked at a lot of different headlights but none fit. Angle on the new beetle ones is wrong and new mini headlights are too deep.
You can go porsche 993?
But I would stick with either prsche or early beetle lights

BTW A lot like my car.
69 semi auto with 4 tab bonnet, early apron, aero guards, w decklid with early rear valance.

Lee you mean the 1965-66 German Beetle, which still had the early headllights.

The German '67 had the upright headlights like the '68 and on.
