electronic speedo
donn - January 29th, 2012 at 06:14 PM
I'm thinking of replacing my VDO mechanical speedo in the wench with an eloctronic job as the existing one has been playing up for a while, any
experience, cost, brand, alterations to loom etc?
PS it
the existing is not an original VW unit.

I use a Speedhut GPS speedo in my buggy. It was really easy to wire up and is really accurate as it uses a GPS signal. All you need to do is to
connect it to the power and it will work.

You can get them to customise the gauge faces too for not a lot extra.

I've got a VDO Cockpit 85mm electronic unit in my Moke with a VDO/GM universal sender adapted to the gearbox. The same sender fits a VW speedo
cable, you will find info on it on this forum.
It works well, except the needle bounces a bit on rough roads. Almost infinitely programmable for different tyre sizes too.
I actually have a spare speedo I should get around to selling. I bought another one as I thought he first one was faulty. Turned out it was my
sender that was the problem.
Cheers,

They must be made for subi powered beetles as they have a water temp gauge.

the water temp gauge that usually comes with the digital dash system can be exchanged for an oil temp or transmission temp gauge
Still, abit too exie for me, I only need the speedo, the rest would be a waste and wouldn't fit in the miniscule dash in the wench. Thanks anyway.
Just found this, pity it's MPH

have you had any problems in high rise areas with respect to GPS signal?
Just wondering driving through a city whether signal loss would be an issue as it can be with some Sat/Nav systems.

I bought a custom ETB electronic speedo. its fully programmable and the needle is servo driven rather than galvanometer style, so more actuate, faster
response and don't bounce on bumps.
I haven't used it yet though

Sounds good, is it a simple fit in or will I need other components, ie, is it complete?
thanks
Don
It is KPH I assume
cam070 - February 6th, 2012 at 09:23 PM
Donn you will need the hall effect sender to change it from mechanical to electronic.

Hi,
No, it's MPH not KPH, as per the photo as I bought it in the States. Although you could calibrate it as KPH (ie: up to 120 kph instead of 120mph) if
you wanted to.
As already said, you will need a speed sensor to provide a signal for the speedo.

Bugga, thanks anyway bnicho, looks like I'll spend $ and get the existing one refurbished.
