Engine run on???
FROSTY - February 4th, 2012 at 07:33 PM

Hi There, i have an issue of the engine running on after the ignition is switched off. Its a 1600 with stock coil and distributor, 36mm single Dellorto, counter weighted crank, 110 cam. The run on normally isn't too bad but enough to give me the shits...
Thanks
Jason.

What type of fuel are you using?

Hi guys, Yes it has always run-on (sometimes quit bad and others just barely) and i'm running 95 pump gas ( i don't run the lower or blended fuels) I don't do to many K's in the beetle ( 50-60 per week) i have just been reading it could be the spark plugs, idle's to quick or timing can be a little off. I will try a couple of thing tomorrow.
thanks
jason

Check shut off solenoid on carb.

Do Dellortos have them?

Also check idle maybe a bit high?

Generally it's because the CR is too high. Keep it in gear and slide a little clutch out as the engine is turned off. If you let it run on, they often break the crank in two.

I have had the same problem in another air cooled engine of mine, it was caused by a build-up of carbon in the expansion chamber this holds the heat and causes the engine to diesel after the ignition is turned off.

Have you noticed any pre ignition when the engine is running?

As far as fixing it Id try taking the car for a long run and hoping it may remove some of the carbon, failing that remove the heads and have a look.

Just my 2cents, AL:crazy:
