Wipers!
ancientbugger - February 9th, 2012 at 09:17 PM

This may sound a bit lightweight technically but it's got me stumped. My passenger side wiper on the cab has stripped the splines on the cone so that the wiper no longer grips and so a non-active wiper is the result. Is there a replacement part available? I haven't seen anything that remotely resembles what I want and it seems replacing the whole mechanism seems a bit like overkill. Ideas are welcome no matter how bizarre otherwise I can see I'm going to have to buy a whole bloody mechanism because of something so trivial.

Don't know what year model you are after, but this may give you an idea of what's available. Scroll down the page.

Guess what? Mine's a '79 and isn't included on that...bugger. It looks like I'll have to get the wiper mechanism from as late a 1303 as I can and butcher it for the parts that I want:( Seems a pain for something so seemingly trivial.

Dylan may have just what you need for sale here:

Has it actually striped the spline or is it filled with the alloy from the arm? This is a common problem where the arm spins on the spindle and strips the inside giving the appearance that the spindle is stripped. A new wiper arm usually fixes this as long as you clean the splines on the spindle.I should have a used arm if that is the case or if it is the spindle a mechanism. (they may be the same as the s bug)

You should also be ale to get new wiper shafts. Try Vintage or MM

psimitar - February 10th, 2012 at 11:47 PM

Try here 62-79 Bay wiper spindle

cheap and much cheaper shipping than from the US.

You can buy just the spindle with the square piece of steel welded on the back of it.... so they are available new
from somewhjere...

Have you pulled the wiper arm off to see what's stripped.

Everytime I've come across this problem it's been the soft alloy wiper arm base that's stripped rather than the steel wiper motor shaft.

Another wiper arm is a lot easier to try than pulling the wiper motor out and changing the spindle.

Lucky Phil - February 14th, 2012 at 08:13 PM

Just clean the soft alloy from the spline. It will then bite straight into your old arm.
Make sure you have the wipers set correctly as you are pressing a new pattern into it.
Not just a vw issue. Most cars from this era were prone to it.

grumble - February 14th, 2012 at 08:17 PM

If this has been happening over a period you will find that the inside of the arm is worn oversize and the spline will not bite even when the nut is dead tight meaning thatthe next step after the above is fit another arm.
.

Well I actually got new glasses last Monday and had a better look earlier today and Grumble wins todays prize! The spindle was in fact fine so now I have only to get a new wiper arm. Why didn't I get new glasses earlier as it's now raining almost non-stop:(
