High pitch pulsing squeak from engine
Mattriots - February 10th, 2012 at 08:08 PM

As the title says
Coming from the right side of the engine
It's a 1300 single for in my beetle
Engine is otherwise in good nick, was rebuild about 6 years ago and hardly driven
I've checked all the engine tin to see if that was squeaking, but it isn't. And as it increases with revs and kind of pulses, I'm thinking it's probably mechanical
Any ideas???
It's driving me nuts!!!

Ben386 - February 10th, 2012 at 08:12 PM

Its not pinging,is it??

Mattriots - February 10th, 2012 at 08:18 PM

Ping?? As in running lean??
Dunno, how do you check??

Ben386 - February 10th, 2012 at 08:34 PM

Check your timing,check vac advance.
What fuel do you use?

Bizarre - February 10th, 2012 at 08:39 PM

I wouldnt describe pining as a "high pitch pulsing squeak"

Not the fan is it??

Try taking off the fan belt and fire it up and see if you can still hear it

Mattriots - February 10th, 2012 at 08:49 PM

I did a bit of research, I don't think it's pinging, doesn't that sound more clunky??
It sounds like sheet metal on sheet metal squeaking, but it increases with the revs
I've pushed and pulled on everything while the car is running, but the sound doesn't come or go, it stays the same, just a pulsing squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak

matberry - February 10th, 2012 at 08:49 PM

If it's a whistle type of squeek , I'd go with inlet manifold leak at the head or carby, or even loose head.....

Ben386 - February 10th, 2012 at 08:51 PM

I suppose more of a metallic rattle than squeak.
Not an exhaust leak??

Bizarre - February 10th, 2012 at 09:00 PM

generator / alternator bearing??

again - try disconnect fan belt

Mattriots - February 10th, 2012 at 10:18 PM

It ain't the pulleys, sound is coming from below there
And you can still heard it well from under the car
Also I can't feel any exhaust leaks

I'm hoping it's some tin work loose and not engine internals
I'll re check the tin tomorrow

Do You have a Gun...??
a big gun.... a special magnesium alloy gun....

pump about 6 shots into the RHS of the engine...

If any big rats run away.....

that was the problem.... If nothing happens...
keep asking..

Lee

I'm with Matt - describing it as pulsing sounds like an intake leak to me.

Won't be an exhaust leak... they give a boom'y sort of phutt sound... make the engine sound like a tractor.

Check the intake manifold is tight to the head, and that the head studs are all tight.

Umm... OK... think Lee might be somehow related to Gremlins... don't let near a keyboard after midnight !!!

Bizarre - February 11th, 2012 at 08:00 AM

ok - if it is a "choofing" sound it may be a cracked head.
I had this the other day

Pull the sparkplugs and see if there is a "V" black mark
This was causred by a crack in the sparkplug thread

Mattriots - February 11th, 2012 at 09:22 AM

Just changed the plugs and it still makes the noise
I'll check the intake bolts are all tight

Mattriots - February 11th, 2012 at 08:30 PM

Intake manifold is tight
Ah stuff it, this is a job for the mechanic, I quit!!!!!!!

ragged - February 11th, 2012 at 09:09 PM

Matt, drive it up and let me have a listen. I've built one or two engines!

Cheers Dave

Mattriots - February 12th, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Will do Dave, thanks
I've justt gotta get my wheels back from the painters, so maybe in a week or so, I'll give you a call
Thanks

There's your problem - it is the brake drums skidding on the road when you downchange.:lol:

Mattriots - February 13th, 2012 at 12:06 PM

But it's the best way to lower a beetle, roll on the drums!!!!
I'm gonna do the garden hose stethoscope trick tonight, fingers crossed it a dodgy intake gasket, I don't want a leaky head!!
Chirp chirp

Mattriots - February 13th, 2012 at 08:12 PM

Ok so I just did the garden hose stethoscope trick, didn't find anything but a couple of small exhaust leaks( empi gt stainless) but these were making more of a dull chugging sound, they didn't sound chirpy like crickets. I'm gonna fix those leaks but I don't think they are making the chirp.
Also no intake leaks, checked them with the hose and sprayed some starter fluid around, nothing
Couldn't find the noise anywhere around the head either.
Anybody have any suggestions?? Its driving me crazy!!!

Also, stupid question, but as this is my first vw, I don't really know.... But this chirpping cricket noise isn't a characteristic noise for these engines is it???? It's a 1300sp

Cheers

Mattriots - February 13th, 2012 at 08:57 PM

Oh and I pulled the plug leads individually while the car is running, and the noise remained, so I seriously doubt it's engine internals

matara - February 13th, 2012 at 09:26 PM

I had a problem like this that had me stumped for ages. In the end it was the pushrod for the fuel pump that was wrong. I had a replacement pump that I thought was for a generator, but was actually for an alternator. The pushrod needs to be changed to suit and because it was a bit too long it cause a metal on metal squeak. Thats why the squeak became faster as rpm rose.

Cheers

Steve

Mattriots - February 13th, 2012 at 10:00 PM

Good option! I'll look into that
Also just noticed that the flanges on my stainless empi exhaust aren't welded all the way around the pipe, just tacked!!! There is definite carbon deposits on the outside, I'll weld that up, see if that's the mystery chirpy bird

vlad01 - February 15th, 2012 at 03:27 PM

could be rocker failure in the works.

greedy53 - February 15th, 2012 at 08:39 PM

only a guess but take the belt off and see if it still does it,it's a start

Mattriots - February 15th, 2012 at 09:31 PM

I'll give the fan removal a crack
But I doubt it

Mattriots - February 18th, 2012 at 11:37 PM

Problem solved!!
Dodgy empi welds on the exhaust where the heater riser flange is.
Re welded it and now no more chirpy birds
Thanks for your help guys, no more empi crap for me in the future!!
