Hi I have have friend who has an old 912 porsche, it has the original Solex 40pII carbs. I need to find someone possibly in Adelaide that can
tune/repair the carbs properly,
Thanks.
mmmm....... Sort of hard to get parts for.
There is 2 sorts. Spilt shaft and solid. To do with the shaft that joins the butterflies. Alfa1750 on ebay sometimes has rebuild kits.
They are similar to IDF stuff. Just ever so slightly different.
There is also a bloke in the states that sells rebuild kits
I sold a set here ages ago. Do a search and I am sure I posted his link.

Koch Racing Engines still seem to be about though

Thats alot of help, thanks Bizarre, but I also and most importantly need someone who can tune the carbs.
Does anyone know someone good, even interstate from me?
Thanks again.
anyone that can tune Weber IDF's or Dellorto DRLA's should be able to tune these.
The hard part is making sure they are tuneable
They would be 50 years old at least
Problem is Bizarre, I don't know any places in Adelaide who I could trust to even tune a common carby.
So that's why I would prefer someone who new air cooled motors to tune these carbs.
Thanks for your help.
Hi Smithy. Try Mark Poole at Edwardstown for tuning. The carbs will need to be fitted to the car first as jetting is bound to be different to standard
912.
They are a VERY nice carb when not worn out.
Take the return springs off and check for play on the shafts - this is usually accompanied with butterfly grooves in the walls of the throats. There
are refurb kits available from the Solex place in the UK - these include a drill and reamer plus teflon bushes. The shaft itself, usually doesn't
wear (chromed).
Check the float valve - There was retrofit to remove valves which had a glass ball - they tended to develop grooves and receeded up into the vlve,
changing the float level.
There are x3 different levels of Gasket Kits - the complete one is about $70 a pop so make sure that you know what you are getting before you pay for
it.
If a SplitShaft style, make sure that the rubber buffers are in place between the shafts - they tend to bail out, giving different idle points for
each throat.
If you need any jetting changes for tuning, use LargeShouldered Makuni jets, which are cheaper and a direct fit.
Take care with the feed position of the pump jet as it doubles as a power jet at higher revs and causes stutters if not directed correctly.
The German 'SS' manifold is the best but has a 'D' shaped transition into the head (which means that the heads would need to be worked to
suit).
Over the years, the majority of Solexs have been changed out of Super90s, SCs and 912s - (x4 different versions, but each compatible for any engine)
and replaced with various Webers and Dellortos. These days, they are being reburbed and reused - better on the road and the track than the replacement
brands.
Let us know how you go. Lance.
Cheers lance thats close to me will check it out
