Hi all, I haven't been here much lately as the Bug has been running reasonably well of late.
That was until this latest problem has me wondering what the hell is going on.
My daughter parked her Bug in the drive in the eveing and when she came out to the car in the morning there was oily petrol all over the ground
beneath the engine.
I have since pushed the car into the garage and have the arse end up on stands so I can have a gander and try to figure out what the problem is.
I thought it might have been the fuel shut off solenoid on the side of the H30/3- PICT Solex (Brazil). Nope ! I pulled the carby off and checked the
needle and seat..Nope again.
I started the car and after it was running for a few minutes oily petrol was dripping from the heater boxes, the rear og the sump nearest the engine
mounts and off the bottom drain plug of the gearbox. I can't find any petrol leaks from the fuel line or the fuel filter. When the motor is off it
stops after a few minutes and when it is running it starts to leak again in an almost constant stream.
There is no fuel leaking from the carby and running down the inlet manifold...so I'm buggered if I know where it is coming from...any clues. Oh..the
oil filler cap has a very 'petrolly' smell about it as well.
HELP !!!!!! anyone.

Good ol' crook fuel pump gag most likely.
The diaphrams leak fuel into the case so it overfills it and thins the oil out so it leaks from every oriface and joint it can.
Well Joel...you picked it in one, I just changed the new CVD pump for the old one and after draining about 5 litres of mostly petrol from the sump I
gave her a kick ( after giving her a fresh change of 15w-40w of course) and presto...instant smooth idle with no leaks. I noticed before that the oily
petrol was leaking from the push rod tubes too..so it must've been pretty dam full...poor bubby. I'll let it cool down over night and then give it a
valve clearance going over whilst I'm at it tomorrow.
I think I will stop shopping at a certain place in Ryde from now on..the new pump was only a month old and the new SVDA dizzy I got from there shit
the vaccy can in about a week. Me thinks that only genuine German from now on.
Thanks for your help mate I'd have never picked that up and I was seriously thinking about dropping the donk to find the problem.

Yuu're not the first person that's happened to and won't be the last with quality or lack of with todays replacement pumps.
I'm sure I won't be the last one...unfortunately. I just hope that someone who owns a VW and isn't aware of the tremendous knowledge base here at
Aussieveedubbers doesn't have a panic attack like I almost did and pays huge amounts of $ to fix a very easily sorted problem.
The motor cooled over night and I reset the tappets this morning to the mandatory .004" and it sounds and ticks over very nicely. I just hope the
internal petrol bath hasn't done too much if any damage to it.
One problem though is that my daughter is becoming a bit peeved at these simple fixes that are seeing her off the road for a week whilst I work in
Sydney and only come home on the weekends whilst she lives here in Newcastle. A teenager with a car that plays up is a disgruntled one and as much as
she loves Oscar..she is seriously thinking of selling him and buying something much newer and more reliable. I'd love to keep him and work on
it...but I already have a Valiant Charger sitting in my garage and another toy wouldn't wash with the Minister for fun finance and frivolity. I can
see his days being numbered.
I would join the NRMA so if the vw stops again she wont be stuck on the side of the road and the car can be towed for free to a vw repairer in
Newcastle to get her back on the road sooner.
