I 've just taken my beetle to the body shop to be resprayed today & I'm having the aerial on the roof removed that I originally put there 10 years ago & I was going to put the aerial in the boot (front) on the plastic wire cover running length ways. I'm pretty sure that I had seen another beetle with the same trick done many years ago, anyone else done this type of thing.

they look good frenched into the fender/wing/front 1/4 u know or i have seen ones in the hot rod mags that are "invisible", they sit on the rear shelf and go under the rear window rubber or something. around $40.

Not such a good place for it, from an electrical point of view. Try wrapping your cell phone up in Tin foil and see if you can ring it? Your effectively doing a similar thing.

Skewtype3's idea of the aerial being on the back window would work OK, except that there is an engine radiating a huge amount of "noise" just beneath it - lots of interferance.

If you like listening to the radio the best place for it is where it is now.

Yes this works well... Leigh has it on his car... I suggest that you screw it to the inside of the cover then it wont even be seen.

Also you can put it down the inner 1/4 panel

On my smoothie I have it running along the underside of my passengers running board. Its bolts up to where the running board bolt on... with some plastic ties.

The other method i might try is to put in in the front windscreen rubber betwen glass and rubber

I hate external aerial on Hotties.

For reception it work OK.

what about in the front bumper ?

good point about engine noise but i do like the front boot idea or front window (duh)

If you put the aerial inside, the bug will act as a reverse satelite dish. Toy could grow a third arm! Turn it upside down and you could signal the space shuttle.

I've welded up the previous three holes and am starting a new one on the A pillar.

Its pretty good, but not as good if it was on the roof standing by itself.

I dont havea problem with it around Sydney.

When the car is mooving it can sometimes fade a little but only just noticable.

I couldnt get 2WS the other day on way to Valla i lost it about Ourimbah on the highway going north to valla

In tha magna with aireal at the back i probally loose it around the roundabout near newcastle.

I ran the cable down trhough the bottom of the front 1/4 panel cut the bottom of that section right off to allow water drain and access for aireal.

If you can get a aireal from a van truck there got a plastic sheef over them to add a bit more protection i have it fully extended the length of the running board. made some staino clips up that go under the runing board bolt heads and extend out so you can zip tie the aireal to them.

Another idea is to use the front bonnetfor aireal by doing same with nylon washers.

I have my aerial sitting under the carpet at the bottom of the front nose cone. My nose cone and bonnet are fiberglass, so I don't know if this makes it work better than if it was under the front of a steel beetle.

Although my brother has his TV aerial inside his house roof, which is metal. It just sits on the top side of the plasterboard ceiling. It seems to work well.

One hopes your Bro's house has windows? A fair amount of signal is going to come thru those. But I'd be interested to see how Jak gets on. I guess Jak could drive around with the bonnet open

Your fiberglass front will make a difference as Fiber glass is an insulator, hence signal will pass thru it (same as glass). A Beetle bonnet is effectively a tin box, equivilent to a Faraday cage.

I believe 68Autobug is a ham radio enthusiast, so he would be the best person to speak to.

perhaps go to a BMW dealer and scrape up a shark fin of the new 3 Series? Probably nount it with double sided foam tape just after the windscreen on the front seeing that electrical 'noise' from engine may affect the radio waves.....]

The new BA Ford wagon has the radio aireal on the glass of the rear windows. Not sure if its stuck on or samwiched between the laminates. Good idea tho. Barely noticable , no more than a rear window demister. Possible retro fit to VW application?
