what oil??
Tas67 - March 4th, 2012 at 04:42 PM

i have just purchased a 67 beetle that has been in a shed for the last 10 years, one of the front wheel was seized (brakes) and i have that sorted. i put some fuel in her a new battery and some aero start and bugger me dead she started and ran well enough to drive on the trailer...my question is...what sort of oil does everyone use in the older beetles??

thanks

I use and recommend ACE Air Cooled Engine oil. Australian made and has all the properties required for long life.

Penrite HPR 30, readily available and a good oil, used it for years.

tar76 - March 4th, 2012 at 07:23 PM

I'm keen to try ACE but could never find it!

I stock it Tarin, 5 litre or 20. :)

yep, now fully synthetic :tu: good oil.

Next engines will be upgraded to Joe Gibbs oil for me though, even better by a long shot.

A pointer for you folks is stick to one oil brand and type, otherwise changing brands can do its damage by additive chemistry clashes.

And don't use caster oil, its no good for the engine

I just bought forty liters and that was a minerial base not synthetic

Any decent name-brand 20W50, as long as it's clean! I like to buy Nulon or Penrite because they're Aussie-made and owned, but the most important thing is to change it regularly! Buying cheap oil and change it every 5,000km will be far better for your bug than putting fancy oil in every 10,000km.

Joel - March 5th, 2012 at 05:52 PM

20/50w is fine in one getting a bit long in the tooth but that's like tar in a fresh motor.

Anyone leaving oil in an air cooled engine for 10,000kms needs their VW taken away from them.
Even fancy oil is cheaper than rebuilds.

helbus - March 5th, 2012 at 06:02 PM

It says in the original owners manual for our 1302.

Regular oil changes are required even if the best brand of oil is used.

Change every 5000km

Oil consuption is 0.5-1.0 liter per 1000km

Synthetic not really good for air cooled engines.
Poor heat transfer qualities.

vwo60 - March 6th, 2012 at 07:50 AM

If you go to the link you will find that HPR 30 is a minerial based oil.

YES MOST important...

always use the same brand of oil...
no swapping about...

NOT GOOD....

and synthetic oil isn't recommended for air cooled engines.
and You still NEED to change the oil at every 5000klm maximum...

as recommended by VW Mexico in 2003..

and Me.. .LEE

YES I agree Joel

synthetic oil isn't recommended for air cooled engines...

they will leak from places they didn't leak before...

best to stay away from them...
