Hi guys,
I am a bit new about these parts, we bought a 70 notch not so long ago and I have posted a thread in that section.
The other day I did pass pink slip with no trouble though on the way home all was ok until I got into my driveway and I could no longer select any
gears.
Thinking that the cable might be a culprit and not knowing the history of the car I purchased and have now replaced the bowden tube and the cable
thinking it might have stretched or frayed. The cable had one strand broken but was the same length as the new.
Unfortunately after fitting the new cable and bowden tube things are behaving exactly the same as before.
I have The situation is that the selector can get all gears when the car is not running, but will not engage forward gears when idling. The reverse
gear clashes when you have the clutch depressed and select it through the gate. This leads me to the conclusion it is probably not the selector/front
gearbox mount.
Where should I be looking next? I am pretty sure I am going to be up for a new clutch from what I can ascertain. Any advice appreciated if there are
any other checks I can make.
Cheers,
Michael.
Check the bolts that secure the front nose cone of the gear box, make sure they are tight. Whilst under the car checking that have a look at the shift rod coupling, there is a cover plate under the car to inspect this. if all fails engine out and have a look at the thrust bearing.
clutch tube in tunnel may have broken loose, get someone to look at cable at gearbox when clutch is depressed see what is moving or not
mmm ^^^ yeah that one too!
Does the clutch feel normal, spongy or hard? If it is spongy it may be the tube broken away or a cracked diaphragm in the pressure plate,if it is hard it may be a spring out ofthe clutch plate jamming in the diaphragm when it is compressed.Try Klaus's option first and from there it is usually an engine out.
Thanks guys. I'll do the checks but can see an engine coming out. Might be a good time to do some cleaning and some seals at any rate.
I had a leaky rear main,
Covered the clutch in oil which resulted symptons described...
Best of luck!
