Type 3 gearbox blanking plugs
Joel - July 7th, 2012 at 01:06 PM

Hey all,

I've got a DC gearbox from a 73 type 3 I'm thinking of putting in my bug, the DC box in my 70 bug put up with alot of years of Rotary power and didn't break so they can't be half bad.

I was looking at it this morn and noticed it still has the blanking plugs in the beetle mounting holes.

Before I get rough with it does anyone know if these just drive out or do they need drilling out?

i have drilled out a few sets
with a 7 mm then the rest will come out easy
or if you get a good center make just 8 mm

Pin punch knocked them out pretty easily, although interesting only from inside out which was fun without belting the input shaft.

They would not budge trying to knock them inwards for some strange reason, no visibible lip on either the plugs or the gearbox.

They probably have a slight taper and are installed from the outside in.
