Hi
I have been looking at making up some custom wide rims, for a four stud pattern, to suit a baja as I am not happy with whats on offer from the
suppliers.
I can get outer bands in pretty much all sizes.
Can someone tell me what the internal diamtre is in a standard 4 stud 15" rim (I am usure weither the standard rims are stepped and use a 14"
center)
I will be reusing the standard centers in the new wider bands.
I only have alloy mags at home so can measure myself.
Thanks
All my 4 stud steelies are in storage at my folks place so I can't give you a measurement at the moment but they are the same as a 15" commodore
rim.
I knocked the centers out of some Commodore Pursuit rims and welded in the centers of some 4 stud steelies, they were a nice fit.
I never thought of the commodore rims, good call. There should be a few 6" wide ones floating around.
Anyone help with the diametre, i need to order them soon.
Sall good, thanks, sorted 15'' (well a mm or so less)
In the old days, the thing to do was to turn down the VW centres to 14" on a lathe and then weld them into 6" Holden rims from a HQ-WB. The wheels on my bug were made like that. Two of them even have ROH stamped into them, although I'm not sure whether that means that the whole wheel was made by ROH or just the rim. The other two I think are a home-made job, although it has to be a fairly well-equipped workshop to have a big enough lathe to turn the wheel centres down. As you say, 15" is probably a better way to go now, especially for tyre availability. I used to run 195/75R14 and now run 195/70R14 Sumitomos.
ROH made all holdens steelies, even the 15" Commodore pursuit rims I used had ROH stamped into them
You can always tell the DIY 14" wide steelies, they use VW centers but when they turn them down to fit it cuts halfway through the cooling slots.
My blue Lbug has the same deal, I think the rears may have even been banded too
Jeeeez Joel, hope you never had to use that spare. It looks like something from a Formula 1 blowout
Bet it went off with a bang.
It scared the living shit out of the girl who owned that bug, she got it home parked it and refused to drive it again and bought a new car.
I found the rego sticker off it the other day, that was back in 2001.
What's worse, the spare that went on it and is still on it now is the factory Olympic air ride cross ply.
Poor bug is still sitting in a friends shed waiting for her moment, rats have eaten the interior and filled it up with Macadamias
Joel, you're right about the home-made wheels cutting through the windows. On my car, one pair of centres is cut down through to the windows, and the
other pair has about a 3mm lip around the windows. Obviously slightly different shaped rims. They're slightly different offsets as well, wider on the
back.
How wide is that 14" wheel in your spare wheel well? I didn't think that a 6" wide rim would fit in the spare wheel well. I've got a stockie in
mine for a spare, but that's mainly because it only came with four wide wheels. Michelin XZX though, not an Olympic!
6.5" I think but it was lacking somewhat in air pressure and sidewall content which was why it fit the spare wheel well.
Custom offroad used to do them. Take in your old narrow stockies and they would put them on a ROH band with whatever offset you want. Have 2 sets of 7 inch that fit perfectly on the back. Plus 6 inch fronts for a super with std struts
