WBX Exhaust on Type 1 Engine?
sander288 - July 29th, 2012 at 08:35 PM

Was reading an article on Club VW's website about exhausts and it mentioned that a WBX exhaust can be bolted onto a type 1 engine without too much hassle; just a flange swap.

Has anyone done this on a bug?

I've trawled the net for pictures and it seems no one has done it; probably because of the easy availability of 4-1 headers; but surely a 4-2-1 header is better for drive ability

Cheers

Shaun

Wassers have the same ports on the heads but the flanges all face the same way, just a cut and turn job.

Hi

You only need to change two flanges, cant remember which ones.

check on the Samba forum and shoptalkforums in the US.
theres a bit of a scene in the US doing hybrid wasserboxer conversions, they take a wasserboxer case, machine off the water jackets shroud, relocate the head studs slightly in the case and use air cooled barrels and pistons and heads, so they mod the exhaust some times, or use air cooled headers. The crank shafts are a bolt-in to an air cooled case apparently.

search on 'oxyboxer' as well.
