standard compression?
Mad Manx - October 4th, 2002 at 11:56 AM

Can someone tell me what the standard compression ratio for a twin port 1600 type one engine is?

If you mean the models sold in Australia, they were 7.5:1 The current beetles come with 6.5:1 for US and 6.6:1 for the rest of the world.

prior to April 68' 7.7:1
from April 68' 7.5:1

sorry for the delay in replying :D

Don't want to nit-pick Craig, but a pre-'68 1600?

(just raggin ya', don't take offence.)

what should we be looking for in a compression test on a 1600????

70AutoStik - January 29th, 2004 at 11:30 PM

From memory, the book says 80. For a bit of performance 120 is nice, but 100+ with less than 20 between the lot shoud be a sign a rebuild is not quite required yet.

My book says 106-135psi new,92psi wear limit for a 1300sp.For a 1500sp 114-142psi new and 100 clapped. My balltearers got way over 150psi on all cylinders,AND YES IT DETONATES LIKE A B##T##D,im waiting for the big one to drop.:D

The main object is to find if there ia any differance in the compression figures they need to be equal or with in a few Lb either way.

You dont want one cyclinder with a drastic different pressure

From memory the last time i did my 1500 engine the reading was around 150Lb

excellent.

my 1600tp has ~130 all round...
