sun roof

i have a old 753mm sunroof that i would like to fit, but when i place it on the roof of my beetle the curb of the roof looks to great to fit . now for my question does any one know anything about fitting them or if it would fit as i`m not game to cut the roof to see if it would .i have seen beetles with after market sunroof maybe they are smaller to fit the curb better

what do you mean by a 753mm roof? do you mean a factory goldie sunroof?

i have no idea what a goldie is , my sun roof is a after market one bought through any auto shop .750mm is how long the hole is going to be .it`s name is elite

dont do it waste of time and they are prone for rust!!!!

wadd, the sunroof needs to roughly follow the profile of the roof before you start cutting, because bending the sunroof will narrow it slightly.

Steel one's can be reshaped, as can soft sunroofs. Glass ones are somewhat difficult (like impossible) to bend, unless they're a twin-port sunroof which can usually be bent in the middle between the glass panes. (I fitted one to an ?Austin 1800 years ago :thumb) :)

thanks KruizinKombi .the glass is roughly the shape of the roof but the aluminium fram is pretty flat .so does that mean that it will bend to shape a little bit .

I'm assuming that you have a single-port glass sunroof?

First you need to make sure that the frame is contoured to match the glass. If it isn't, then you're going to have major leaks. Assuming that the glass matches the contour of the roof, then you should be close to having the frame match the roof also. You may be then able to adjust it slightly to fit the roof, without developing leaks between the frame and the glass. Glass will bend a little, but you don't want to overdo it.

Get it all shaped to match the roof before you even consider cutting the hole. You don't want to cut the hole only to find that the sunroof is too flat to suit the roof's curvature. Try taking any latches etc off so that the sunroof will sit evenly on the roof. You can then check the shape more easily. :)
