Transaxle ratios
beetleboyjeff - September 3rd, 2012 at 12:03 AM

The transaxle in my 75 L bug has been losing reverse (again) for quite a while now (backing trailers too often), and it finally got too bad, so I swapped it with a $100 'mystery' trans. that I bought from Lithgow a few years ago.

My L bug trans. is single side plate, and the trans. I have replaced it with is a double side plate. I also had to change the nose cone as the one on it was 2 holes for the mount, and mine is 3 holes for the mount.

I then found that the holes for the rear mounts had metal 'plugs' in them - I think I saw them in a thread some time ago, and I think it means it is a type 111 trans.

The question is, does anyone have any idea of that the difference in the ratios and/or diff may be between the 2 transaxles?

It is only temporary untill I can afford to get Dangerous (I hope) to work magic on my 'good' transaxle (well, good except that it also has a shot reverse), but if I need to be carefull about engine speeds (mainly on the highway), I would like to be aware of it.

You will need the code of the box, its stamped on the side at the front, then go the check it on this site. it will only tell you the diff ratio but with a bit of research you should be able to determin the rest of the ratios.

Jeff, if it's an IRS box with the 2 bolt nose cone and blank plugs like in that one of mine it should be a DC code box.

All the aus spec type 3s had a 4.125 R&P same as Sbug and 1500.
They just had a taller 3rd.

Thanks very much Joel. That is what I was after. :-)
