I have a problem.
The Manx SR has its tail in the air because it has a Subaru engine in it. It has a Supasump but because the exhaust pipes and the sump hang down below
the engine it was necessary for me to raise the rear end to get good ground clearance.
As a result the car has its bum in the air and I don't like that look in a car. Yes. That means that I don't like the look of nearly all modern
cars. I like a car to ride level.
If I was to raise the ball joint front with adjusters to the level that I want there would be no downward movement in the front suspension. That is
undesirable.
Is a factory, or acceptable to the registration authorities, two inch lift spindle similar to the ones on Things available?
From memory, Things are raised by about 4 inches, which is too much.
I need two inches of lift.
PS. I am not interested in cut and shut or welded spindles. I want properly forged steel spindles made to VW specifications.
More than 50 people have viewed this thread and no-one has told me where I can get two inch BJ raiser spindles, so I must accept that what I want is
made of the rarest mineral on earth, unobtainium.
That's a shame as it would have fixed my problem.
Oh! Well! Now for plan B, whatever that will be.
Maybe I could fit Thing spindles and then lower the front with adjusters to the height that I want. That would cost a pretty penny and make it into a
big job.
Unfortunately that idea also goes against Occam's Razor. "Don't complicate things beyond necessity", or in modern parlance, The KISS Principle,
"Keep It Short and Simple."
Hmmm! Now I wonder what plan C will be.
Well, could fit adjusters in a manner to 'lower' the beam, (or purchase a readily available 2nd hand 'lowered' beam) and fit the thing
spindles.
(kind of a 1 step back, 2 step forward moment. but you would achieve your desired height with plenty room for downward travel.)
Aftermarket raised spindles from memory were predominantly cut and welded units when i was hunting around.
Thing spindles raise the front about 2 and a half inches. So I would fit them and see how it sits.
You might find that even half an inch higher than where you want it that it is actually fine.
Smiley
I've been operating on incorrect information.
If Thing spindles will raise the front by 2 1/2 inches, then they are worth a try.
Where would I get some and what is a good price?
I think matt berry has some thing spindles!
Thank you mactaylor.
Who is matt berry and how can I contact him?
I can't find him on this forum under that name.
Hello......I can get some for you PM me or phone
Also try Paul - he has about 5 sets of 181 arms and spindles in stock with brand new Ball Joints.
You can PM him at veedubberpaul58 or email him at fit-turn-tech@hotmail.com
Thanks for your responses.
I 'phoned Matt Berry and he said that Thing spindles would cause the front to ride much too high.
After several ideas were spoken about it was agreed that the best solution to the problem would be to raise the front one inch on adjusters and to
lower the rear one inch to level the vehicle.
That's now plan C and it's what I'll do.
