Hi guys,

A while ago I asked about replacement screens for oval beetles. I now have a new laminated one cut that fits nicely in my new WW rubber but the auto glass guy can't get the new trim (also WW) to fit in the rubber and stay on the glass. I am not sure what to do now and my project has come to a stop. Anyone in Vic have experience fitting these and happy to do a cashie?

Hi,When we did mine i held the trim in place with masking tape.Use plenty of lube when fitting and take it easy.(is the trim ss or alloy)if stainless steel bend it to exact shape before fitting.Hope this helps Steve

Hi Johnny, I've done a few and the best advice I can give is use the correct/best lube. As Steve said, fit the rubber to the screen, then trim into the rubber. I actually put some lube on the glass and the rubber but leave the majority for the opening and seal once all the trim is in as too much lube will actually make fitting the chrome difficult as it all want's to come off the glass,
For lube, I always used and recommend Glycerine (available in liquid form from a chemist), it's what the factory used and won't hurt the rubber , paint or metal. The type of lube is very important. I was helping a mate the other day, he thought Silicone spray was as slippery as anything, but it soaks into the rubber and really wasn't good enough to get the job done. After 3 or 4 tries, we used Gibbs Brand lubricant, like Glycerine, it's not petrolium based and is super slippery. screen went straight in with little difficulty. Carefull using CRC or similar, it makes laminated screens go foggy around the edges as the plastic laminate absorbs it.

Um, the trim goes on after the glass and rubber are installed in the car. I managed it with a blunt wide screwdriver but a window install guy should have the special tool that open the rubber channel and presses the trim into the channel in one movement as you push the tool around the windscreen.

You definately have to make sure the trim is correctly bent to follow the corners or it'll just pop out. The plastic trim as far more pliable if you soak it in hot water for 10-15mins before installing it. Metal trim should have the correct radius for the corners

Did I miss something? Way I read this was glass, rubber and trim were assembled off the vehicle and then put in. Sorry if i read it wrong
