Hey there just wondering if someone could help me out, I have a 1600 engine (stock) going into a 1963 beetle with a 1200 gear box.. I wanted to know if I bolted a pair of 44mm webbers on would the gear box be able to handle it ????
Others will correct me if i am wrong but i believe, as i have had to do this in the past.
Unless you change the flywheel ( not sure which one) you will have to grind the gearbox out to fit the 1600 and bush the starter motor spigot hole.
Also depends on how you drive it if it will handle it?
Oh yeah sorry Black64 I have already done the conversion and works well, however I was wondering more to the side of things if it was worth putting
another gearbox in or will 1200 be ok...? as in not brake gears etc, It will be my daily driver. As for the way I drive it I wont be thrashing it but
maybe pulling 2nd's every now and then would keep me happy
thanks for the quick reply
The strength difference isn't that great but the gearing will be your main problem unless you do mainly stop/start city driving.
With 1200 gearing that engine will be screaming at motorway speeds, especially if you run non stock tyres.
Ahhhh ok, so what would you do in my situation....? I do live in Concord and work in the city so it will mostly be stop start.
P.s my dream is to one own bug with what your done, with the EJ254... your legend mate !
For now I will stick to carbs... Oh hey here is another thing ! once 44mm webbers are in will decklid be able to close...?
