Valve seals

Hi, Do you guys use valve stem seals? I see Justkampers list some, like a square section O-ring, and I did find some fitted to the inlet valves on two
of the spare heads I have. As they would just ride up and down on the valve stem I do not see what they would achieve, on other engines I have worked
on the seals have been held on the head and the valve stem passes through them.

no such thing used in Air cooled VW engine

I believe they were used in the 50s 60s in the factory so new beetles in showrooms would not puff out blue smoke when started
they are not normally used these days although some engine gasket kits have them
