Warwick 2012 shows up the clutch!
beachbuggy61 - October 2nd, 2012 at 03:48 PM

Firstly, I'd like to say what a great weekend! My first time dragging my orange Baja and throughly enjoyed it. Great to meet new people every time I go to a VW event. Well done to the organisers!

Now my technical problem. I experienced quite a lot of clutch slip (especially on my first run of each day) and so am looking at what to do. I'm currently running a Stage 2 Kennedy with an ACE Copperhead clutch plate. These are supposed to be good for 250+hp and I'm not near that!

Any advice on what I should run to alleviate the issue? 6 puck clutch? New pressure plate? Stage 3?

I've also read that copperhead clutch plates work best when they've heated up (maybe that's why the first run was more slippy). Anyone have thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance, Marc.

Have you checked the installed height of the pressure plate?

Thanks guys, I will have a chat to Boris.

Installed height? What should I be looking for here? Any idea what the measurement should be please?

Thanks.

Page 5 if you ARE logged in and page 7 if you ARE NOT logged in.

The factory spec 21mm is too shallow for most Kennedy pressure plates.
This causes the diafragm to go "over centre" and thus lose clamp load.

You will need to either: shim the pressure plate, or, use a thinner disc if your FW is at spec depth.

See the link Daimo posted to see how to determine if the pressure plate is going "over centre" and reducing your clamp pressure.

Also make sure you have ample free play between the TO bearing and the pressure plate.
As your disc wears, the fingers rise, and this will unload the clutch if the TO bearing begins to put pressure there.

Thanks Dave. I've checked the freeplay and there's plenty so there's no contact there.

I wasn't aware of the factory spec being too shallow and the whole 'overcentre' thing, so I'll check that out and make sure the fingers are slightly uphill as per the link above...

Thanks for the help.

Marc.
