Clutch cable stuck?
rustys - November 8th, 2012 at 09:41 AM

Hey guys,
Replacing my clutch cable ('65 beetle) and getting it all the way down through the tube until it gets stuck at the very end of it. I was thinking I could have someone push it through while i wiggle the rear end of the flex tube where it sags to help it through....but it isn't really flexible. Any suggestions? Would it be easier to take the flex tube out to get it through? If so, how do I go about doing that. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

YES , take the tube off, then slide it back on once cable in.
make sure you put grease on the new cable.

Thanks, but how do I remove the tube? There is a little support holding the end of the tube up at the very end connected to the transaxle, but it looks like I'd have to take the whole transaxle apart to take that off.

I thought the clutch tube was welded in a few spots inside the tunnel..

as when one has been welded from the outside they do tend to break away from the welds as they need to be welded inside the tunnel..

sure I saw a cutaway tunnel once showing that...

This is just the flex tube at the rear. Some call it a bowden tube I believe. I think this is seperate from the clutch tube in the tunnel...could be wrong. I don't want to take out the entire clutch tube....it is just stuck at the very end right before it comes out. The only thing I can think of would be to pull it forward out of the tranny mount, but I imagine it will be a real pain getting it back in.

Yeah just pull it forward then put it back in once the cable is through

Great! Got it through. Now I just have work this pedal assembly back in right.....

Thanks for the help!

Ok, now more problems. I got the pedal assembly in what seems to be the right place with the clutch cable still on the hook.....but the long rod that connects to the back of the accelerator pedal doesn't seem to be going into place. I don't know if all Beetles have accelerator pedals like this b/c I can't find anything about it. It is a long rod that connects to the back of the accel pedal and runs through the pedal assembly and into the tunnel. Not sure how this is supposed to work....
