Ok, so call me stupid if you want to but it's been a while and I'm just getting back into them after many years "off the grid" so to speak.

I want to ask about 1600 motors and if there are differences between the type 1 engine (I'm hoping I'm correct in my references, I mean the upright engine with a fan shroud on the top) fitted in a 73 kombi andf a similar beetle? I recall reading about needing to use an adaptor to fit a beetle motor to a kombi box but not sure if that applies to 1600 engined vehicles or just to later boxes?

I'm not looking at doing engine swaps or anything like that, just exploring my options since I need to do some work to my motor in the "tidy up" department and obviously the question of compatability comes up. I want to throw a gasket kit through since these are cheap enough at around $8 to $10, just the ones able to be done with the engine in the car, certainly the pushrod tube seals leak a little so need to sort them out - can someone explain the spring loaded pushrod tubes, they apparently solve the issue of leaks?

Also curious re single port vs twin port motors? Mine looks to have the "double" inlet on each side of the manifold so does that make it a twin port?

Last stupid question - how does one identify if one has a 009 distributor?

Essentially the same engine, just a few minor differences.

If its a 1600 box in your kombi the bug engine will bolt straight up, no adapter, its just the later 1800 and 2L type4 gearboxes that have the longer input shaft.

The main problem you will face with a bug engine doesnt have the mounts for the kombi engine cradle or a port for the the brake booster.

You can buy cheesy adapters that bolt to the oil pump studs to fit the engine cradle but its not an ideal solution.
Most late bug blocks have the bosses there, they just need drilling and tapping.
