Hi
Firstly is it possible to fit type3 cooling fan/shrouds to type 1 engine?
I imagine this to be possible but have not found any info on the subject.
How much further does it protrude out to the rear of the engine.
I ask this as I would prefer the lower profile for the rear of my trike.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers Jade
it would be possible as they share the same case. no idea how much further back it sits as ive never compared the two side by side.
With the shroud and fan there is a good 4-5" extra over hang over an upright engine.
What kind of trike?,
they are usually all made with enough clearance for an upright engine.
People have run type3 pancake engines in buggies and bajas even the odd trike,
the main problem with them is they run hotter due to the fan intake being down low at the rear they recirculate alot of the hot air off the heads and
muffler.
In a type 3 that is sealed off and pulls cool fresh air from up higher outside the car.
The only advantage aside from being flatter is if you throw the fan belt it wont cook.
Its a bulkier and heavier cooling system and very visually displeasing in something on display like a trike.
As Joel has said they are the same engine basically, just the oil cooler etc is placed differently..
rearwards... they are a lot bulkier with the large fan housing on the back..
and as Joel said they are the ONLY air cooled VW that You can still drive when the fan belt breaks as the fan is on the crankshaft
the belt just drives the generator...
You really need to have a good look at what would be accessible when the engine is in the trike...
carbies and air cleaner etc...
as You don't want to have to take the engine out to adjust anything...
as on type 3s they all had an opening directly OVER the engine, so everything was accessible..
cheers

Thanks for the input guys..
I am about half way through building my trike as an ICV.
The main frame is complete, so I now need to start thinking about the rear bar work, so it all looks right with the cooling gear.
Because I am building it myself I can make it how I want, when I aplied to the Transport department I only specified
dimentions etc for the main frame, not the rear frame.
The other option I thought about was using a centre mount fan, (purely for looks)
Do these cool as well as the stock fan shrouds??
You mean a Porsche fan?
I'm no expert, but I would believe they would have more air flow than a beetle.. ??
as Porsche engines produced More horsepower .. so More heat.?
also look great... Maybe You can them get aftermarket along with fibreglass fan shroud..
I also believe them to be very expensive...?? Porsche..
what is an ICV??
Incapacitated Community Vehicle?? lol
Best of Luck with Your Trike..

Hi Lee
ICV is an "Individually Constructed Vehicle"
The centre mount fan shroud that I refer to is an aftermarket fan shroud (not porsche)
that sits in the same spot as the factory housing, working with factory cooling tins and is sold with a purpose built generator stand
that repositions it to the centre.
