I'm thinking of buying a 2002 Mk 4 Golf with 80,000 km on it.

Is this model OK and what is peoples experince with it?

Some UK models seemed to have issues with gearboxes and water pumps.

Water pumps & window regulators are the major issues

They are a good solid car.
What model you getting??
Manual or auto??

The window regulator is an easy fix
If it was going to break probabaly would have done so by now

If it is a manual you can have issues with it being hard to go into first.
I just go into 2nd and then into first. Never an issue if you double shuffle. Just hard coming to a set of lights or at a stand still.

Water pump should be changed at the 100,000 - 120,000km service with the timing belt
Extra couple of bucks and worth the piece of mind.
Guaranteed it will go within 10 thou after you skimped doing the belt

You will be up for some expense soon though.

brakes and rotors - usually last 50 thou a set and need rotors every second set. Buy them yourself and get a mechanic to change them
clutch if it is a manual

But again - a good solid car
