looks like a new 4x4 on the market eh!!
Has anyone got any pictures of the prototype 4x4 Kombi that VW built in the early 70's
Rob........
I think there was a pic of one on the baja busses web site, not sure of address
4X4's rnt my thiign but its still kool
If only they had put the 4wd kombi inyo production, that would have been the ultimate 4wd as kombis go just about anywhere as they are.
I have a bus book and a bit of info and a pic of the prototype. You would be fairly popular if you got you hands on the frontend and transfer case
production parts and started pumping out a few conversion kits!
There also an audi one i think, almost exactly the same apart from badges(hehe). Then theres the porsche cayenne or whatever, same chassis i think but
not the same motor or driveline!
They all suck arse realistically because would anyone seriously want to drive them off road?
Josh
Found the link of the 4wd kombi
http://www.baja.com/kombi/buspictures1.htm

I think I have an artical in an old overlander mag somwhere, too lazy to fish it out, but they were pretty awsome vehicals I think the factory was
looking at challenging landrovers forward control 110. for the German army.
Rob....
mmmmmm
forward coontrol 110
i'd sell my bits for a FC 110.
i'd sell my kids for a uk military FC 101.
but...
the next level
i'd sell the kids plus mum & dad for a 6x6 pinzauger.
even better if it came with a 4x4 Komandeur wagen eh??
I think this is another factory 4WD prototype from 1975

Hi Andy
What book are those pictures from?
Rob.....
here's one from the museum.
I spent last Friday at a VW drive day for the new Touareg SUV as part of the Volkswagen Academy.
Very impresive, comes in a V6, V8 and V10twin turbo diesel. The V10 has a massive 750nm of torque and does 0-100 in 7 seconds. Not bad also weighing
2400kg's!!
The day consisted of a long drive and a 4x4 training course.:P
A 4WD camper. Now that's too cool.
Robo, I scanned them ages ago so I can't remember. My brother borrows heaps from the library and gives me a look before he takes them back.
Phil74 or Mr Simon Glen may recognise them?
:thumb
And i thought the shwimmenwagen was the first 4 wheel drive volkswagen, how silly of me.:alien
My dad's freind has a serious offroad kombi, its called an avrakrombi from meorie he went arount the desserts in africa in it and drove like hepsa places.its a nice car
kool did they ever prototype a beetle 4x4 that would b cool
cheers mattie
How about an old 4x4, the Iltis.volma1
How about an old 4x4, the Iltis.volma1
I like that:thumb
The age old question, so how rare are they???
I had to look twice at the pic from the wolfsburg museum, I thought my Lobus had been stolen! I reckon this would be a good prototype 4wd Kombi
That Aint a VW chasis wish it was though
Iltis is fairly common in Europe and there are a fair few in Canada. That pic is one that I took at the Canadian show in Vancouver in 2000. It was for sale $1500, 1st one that I had seen.volma1
My nephew is a Technician for AVWG (Australian VW Group) in sydney. He had the oppertunity to bring one of the NEW V10 Diesel Touregs home the other
month and then drive it out to some place south of Sydney so the Jurno's and select few could put them through their paces...on and off road.
I didn't drive the above vehicle; however I did get to ride shot gun around the block where he lives! These cars are big...just under 3 tonne
and bigger in width then a kombi, as long as one and a little shorter in hight. It had everything one could imagine and some......every detail has
been thought of, from the duel sun visor per driver and passenger to the 4 area climate control to the hight adjustable suspension with the on board
compressor to pump up those tyres when you are told they are going flat......no shit!
The performance of this thing was out of control.......0 to 100 in about 6 sec! and a top speed of 200+!
Speaking to my nephew he discussed the whys and fors and hows of the electrical system and how the proximaty keys work and how when you get within a
certain distance from the vehicle it unlocks and you can start the vehicle by the turn of a knob...without keys and the seats self adjust to your
settings!!
Oh how is this one; when you reverse, the rear view mirrors tilt down and a small light shines down from the rear view mirror body so you can see the
curb and then the parking assistant kicks in and tells you by audio and visual display on the dash how far you are from the car/object behind you!
If you ever get to have a close look at one; have a look at the construction underneath and at how the electrical system works.......out of control!
German Engineering at it's BEST!
Question: Am I sold on the Vehicle...even if it is a 4 X4.......Oh yeah.......can I aford the $100K price tag......I'll keep saving and
dreaming.
Regards
Mick
PS Will post some photo's of the vehicle next to my Kombi for a size comparrison!
Mmmm, so how much were they asking for it????
So buy, drive down through the 'states' and into Central and Sth America, ship home :thumb
Are they asking big money?
p.s Past tense ,'Were they asking.....?"
