It is so you can put long pieces of timber or steel in the tray and still have them flat without hanging out the back. You see a few timber trucks getting around like that. Some even have the cab in the middle with the tray going past both sides of the cab.

um, i read something somewhere, for ladders maybe? i know they were factory, but i cant remember what for, obviously the rear tray sides were fitted later, as it sorta defies the point of the design.
