Some sad shots of disused VW's
helbus - September 26th, 2002 at 08:01 PM

I have kept these pics around 20K if poss, and hope this is not too many.
On our recent trip we went through Cooma, and some of you may be familiar with the wrecking yard there.
Here are some pics of VW's that were once 'new cars'
Check out the split splitty.
There were about 25 beetles pre 68, two ovals I could see.

(sob)
In about 1968, touring the east coast in our Wolseley 4/44 and sleeping in a pup tent with no floor, I dreamed of owning a Kombi. At the Jindabyne BP station, I thought I spied some splitties round the back, and wandered round to investigate. I remember the several wrecks there had wind-out front windscreens, and someone later told me they had been Snowy Mountains Scheme ambulances. Anyway, I opened the side barn door on one of them, to visualise what a nice warm camp it would make. I was not the first - it was FULL of HUGE brown snakes, about as thick as my wrist, all coiled around on top of each other, and slithering towards the door as I opened it. I have never moved so fast since!

Hellbus, Was there anything worth saving i the yard?

There is over 4000 cars there.
There is no trim or rubber stuff, as the sun has perished it all. You could cut some panels off the splitty bodies. The hang ons are all but gone.
You can see the Beetle on the top pic has a good door. Most of the guards are gone, and all of the decklids and bonnets are.
It's worth going just to look at. If you look in the background of the shots, you will see all of the pre-WW2 Chevs and stuff.
