How high can your bug jump.
Desert Bug - July 26th, 2003 at 07:09 PM

This photo was taken at the '76 BP Mallee Desert Rally by a photographer who knew there was a big dip in the track that I couldn't see. It was obout 1.5 m in the air.

How did the old guts and bum handle that one, must have been a bit of a jolt on touch down!
Rob.......

Desert Bug - July 26th, 2003 at 07:38 PM

Hi Robo,
it landed ok but hard and we didn't realise at the time that one of the steering box bolts had cracked and 20ks from the finish lost the steering. We wired the steering box to the front end with a bit of "Farmers' Friend" (fencing wire) and continued on, finishing 5th in the Baja class.

Baja Wes - July 28th, 2003 at 09:13 AM

I've been about 1m in the air, but this is the highest photographic evidence I have :)

This was my original comments on the photo "Judging by how far I am past the top of the dune (on the very right) I figure I am on my way back down in this shot. However the lovely camera-woman Sally is convinced her lightning reflexes have caught me at the highest point of my jump."

jboy82 - July 28th, 2003 at 05:29 PM

Thats pretty high tho.

Mad Manx - July 28th, 2003 at 08:38 PM

What sort of damage does jumps like these cause to your cars? Or better yet what precautions do you guys take to preserve your vehicle?

By the way those picture are sweeeet:bounce

zac_smits - July 28th, 2003 at 09:33 PM

i figured that that's why they were jumping on sand dunes...it doesn't do as much damage?
the racing shocks in my golf keep me fairly well connected with the ground, although, i do seem to have a bit of trouble with the front end sliding when i drive around round abouts :P:P

last celtic warrior - May 27th, 2006 at 09:35 PM

I've been pretty airborn in my buggy a few times. Heaps of fun, but I did crack the chassis eventually. I class the repairs as maintenance and will only jump it higher when it is back on the road...
