After selling our kombi a few months back we decided to downsize a little a get a type 3, chose the wagon because of having a little girl and the bit
of extra space being handy. My wife has always wanted a Notch but compromised on this one! Long term plans are a full resto but for now its just
getting lowered, some decent rims ( eventually ) Maybe brm's... and a solid reliable engine. The car is completely original which is why we bought
it, I have had plenty of vw's that 100 other people have had a crack at painting, mechanical and electrical work and i'm over it! An unmolesterd
original is what we wanted! It has very little to no rust what so ever, all original paint apart from a few minor touch ups here and there, orignal
everything except the motor! A few yobbos have had a crack at it and really messed things up! So first up it was off to dave for some mechanical
love.... Here are some pics...
Sorry for the poor quality.
When we first got it.
Dave totally impressed with the task at hand!
We found the cam end plug was slowly getting worn away by the flex plate due to incorrect fitting of the end plug and bad end float.
Sandblasted all the tinware and painted it Satin black... Gotta look fresh!
While deciding what the hell we were gonna do with this dodgy engine we lowered it... 2 splines front and 1 spline rear. Its sitting even lower today as the suspension has settled overnight. There is still no engine in the back so it should bring it down nice and level when that goes in.
And here is what we did today, We managed to get ahold of another engine with rooted heads, No problem because my original motor had fairly new mexican heads, bottom end was good and we thought the pistons and barrels were good to until dave scraped a bunch of carbon of the top of 1 piston and found it to be dished! WTF! right... 3 flat tops and 1 dished?? i dunno... anyway because of our location (Daves old mans shed) John just happened to have a few second hand 1641cc piston and barrel kits laying around so we found the best one and used it... So here we have the freshend 1641cc longblock. Ove the next week or so we'll have it all back together and in the car hopefully ready for dubs by the abbey!
MMmmm nice clean Mustard...
nice
Finished knocking up this little sucker for it yesterday! But when we put it in the car it has totally locked up for some reason?? We cant even turn it over to get the torque converter/flex plate bolts done up... any ideas?? I dunno about this auto type 3 thing, i think i should have stuck to beetles and kombis!
Maybe something to do with the guy who put the pistons in!!!!!

Like a !!!!!
Punked you from 100ks away
come up and fix it will ya! We're over it. We're gonna stick to race cars that are clean with shiny new parts from now on!!
Have you checked the fluid in the auto ?
It may be locked up & causing the resistance , just a thought
Nath
I don't think it's a fluid issue, it's bound up on something... Stuck solid! I will check it out though.
what about the flux capacitor?????
Probably... Those things are always a bit flakey!
But that shouldn't really matter untill I hit 88 mph...
Does it roll / move when pushed ?
I dunno, we haven't tried to move it...
Torque converter not home - seen it before
We found it, it seems just that... The input shaft and pump shaft weren't home and the spigot in the converter were all blurred up. Waiting in a new seal for the gearbox and well have it all back in. Thanks for the advice today Aaron!
home at last! The big push to get it to dubs by the abbey was a success but unfortunatly no abbey! Dave finished off the last of it yesterday morning... Seems to be running sweet, drives smooth and looks cool! Just gotta fork out for some new wheels sooner or later, maybe brms or sprintstars?? i dunno, we are just gonna drive it for a while.
This is a beautiful example of Type 3 square. Love it.
Wish I could get a late automatic that just needed an engine and a drop, that would be awesome.
Cheers mate! I was kinda hoping it didnt need the engine part but oh well, its done now!
Aha yeah, understandably!
Would love to pick up one that I could just drive around as a daily. But, need to finish one project first before starting the next!
New bling!
Very nice- good purchase.
Good choice of bling Mick.
Looks the shiz, top stuff. Not much cooler to cruise in than an auto type 3 wagon
Cheers guys! I'm stoked... They scrub at full lock just a little but only due to the fact the wheel arch Is pushed in a little...
