G'day all, thought id start my own members ride/build thread. Im brand new to Volkswagens and picked up my first one today. The mods started when i got home and pulled the running boards off. I need to cut the arse end off and thanks to Smiley who has already given me some good heads ups, hes a good egg! I need to sort the indicators and wipers out they both start for a poofteenth of a second and then stop??? Its got 15x10 chrome stockies on the rear stock pizza cutters on the front. Front discs, swingarm rear, leopard skin interior NOICE! Need front and rear bars, more aggressive rear tyres, (im thinking 30"x10.5 bfg AT of similar) and something a bit bigger on the front, (probably an AT also). I want it to be my winter daily and weekend warrior down at a place called Loveday 4x4 adventures. Hes got rally tracks, hard core 4wd and trophy truck tracks. Here it is. Im assuming its a 1500 but please yell out if im wrong. Its a 69 vintage

Looks like a singleport 1500 to me!

What numbers are on the carb? Should be on the LHS, something like 30PICT.

The carb numbers are VW 137-2?. OK rear is cut no dramas apart from some minor flesh wounds to my hands. Sounds cool with those little chrome baffles removed. Not too loud either. Tomorrow file and paint the exposed steel

"H" is a 1500 case. Could have any barrels on it, but it was once a 1500.

Perfect job on that cut mate. You did exactly what I suggested and left the bodywork on the sides to help keep the engine protected and sealed. Great job.
Plenty of them get cut from just under the rear guard mounting surface diagonally down towards the axle. Which leaves a huge amount of bodywork missing on the side of the engine.

Generator isnt working, so pulled it out and apart today cleaned it all up, got it back together and back on aaaaannnd it still doesnt bloody work. Time to look for a new one

You can probably trim a little bit more off the bottom of those side panels if you wish. Just don't remove the seal groove the the engine bay seal fits into. I would probably just round the bottom corners a bit and call it done.

As for your genny, it isn't the voltage regulator that is the problem? It will more then likely be under the rear seat on the LHS. Check that out too.

Small progress report
Bit the bullet and went got maself a super crap auto pipe bender for $140. Had some pipe laying around, and have got everything bent and fitting it up now. Will add some struts/braces diagonally from the top bar to the firewall at a later date. Hope to have it fitted off tomorrow fingers crossed.

Actually i need to move the lower vertical bars closer to the centre of the motor to clear the axles

Got a bit further than i expected today Bar is welded up but not fixed to the car yet. It'll get painted yellow tomorrow and the fixings and number plate n light sorted. Tyres are due on this week also. Kumho MT 31x10.5 r 15 and fronts will be kumho AT 205 75 r15. I cant find anyone to supply just the fibreglass engine cover, so I'll cut the old engine cover down for now.

Fitted off the rear bar and got my new tyres on the ol girl today
Probably will need to look at a body lift down the track, but ill see how we go out at Loveday4x4 first

We used to run VW buggies out in the Peake sand dunes in the 80's. Crapped all over most of the 4x's.

Not really. I'm back at work so flat out and have 4 weeks annual leave soon so am saving me pennies for that holiday.
I've bought another 2 sets of guards and bonnets and engine covers. I only wanted the engine covers but he didnt want to separate them. I need a new regulator, still havent done that yet. I've been patching the numerous holes in the guards and will start again with fitment. The fella that had it before me didnt do a real good job getting everything even so it looks like its leaning over so i wanna get that looking better. Hopefully I dont stuff em up on my first outing One of the 2 sets of rear guards are a bit narrower than the ones in the pics above so im going to put them on they look tougher IMHO
