2176cc engine spec with pics
Menangler - December 8th, 2003 at 07:12 PM

For those interested, These are the engine specs of my 2176 engine that ran at the dyno day.

Engine case is an Brazilian AS21, with std 8mm head studs.
Crank is an old Okrassa, with 78.4 stroke.
Rods are VW reworked by Pauter.
Cam is a berg GB316, 329 duration and 0.416' lift at the cam.
1.25 to 1 VW ratio rockers, on solid shafts.
Berg Chrome moly push rods.
Magnum straight cut gears.
Piston and barrell kit is 94mm 'B' kit.

Heads are old Street Eliminators that needed a lot of work, fly cut for 37cc chambers, 44x37.5 Manley stainless steel valves, Berg dual valve springs, compression is 10.8 to 1. The heads were done by Martin Francis

Carbs are 48 IDA's with 42mm chokes on tall manifolds, and a Berg linkage.

Fuel pump is from a 70's EFI Kombi with a Malpassi fuel pressure regulator.

Ignition is a Scintilla magneto, with a modified advance curve, and heavy leads.

Exhaust is 1 5/8 merged with a stinger or for the street a crappy nameless brand muffler to keep it quiet.

This is the engine case with crank and rods assembled.

Street Eliminator heads 44x37.5 valves

Exhaust port.

inlet ports.

This engine was built on the cheap, most parts were used, the cam, barrells, piston rings and valves were the only new parts used.
I got the crank for nuthin', It needed a grind. I swapped a set of used 044's for the street eliminators, Case came from Phil 74 kombi,s old beetle that was crashed. Most other parts were found at swapmeets. I put it together myself.

Nice work Dave, will you build an engine for my oval?

vw54 - December 8th, 2003 at 07:44 PM

Nice work Dave, will you build an engine for my oval?

If you have about 8 to 10K then i carnt see it being a problem .... Thats if you purchase all the stuff new of the shelf.

byronbus - December 8th, 2003 at 07:50 PM

:thumb Didnt make it to Dyno Day but Dave's beetle was my favourite at Valla, was actually just saying that I admire Daves work...nice work all the same

I love the single cab as well

vw54 - December 8th, 2003 at 08:16 PM

Yes i realise that ... Beck does nice work

But thats the cost for a decent engine nowdays using new parts..

Makes you think dosent it... I aint got the funds to do it...

Um.... thanks Craig :(

Brad - December 9th, 2003 at 09:12 AM

how do you find teh magneto ? I have one lying around I was going to try on my buggy .

fullnoise - December 9th, 2003 at 09:34 AM

Mucho respect!

Dave you've obviously done a great job putting the engine together and getting the combo right. Well done.

Your car and your engine bay is also a credit to you.

You're a legend on the dyno and down the quarter.

It blows my mind that you're only a few horsepower behind Leigh's high tech turbo gadget.

What was your hp at the Dyno day?

Awesome! The thing looks simply stunning. Pure eye candy for any aircooled lover
You must be very proud, Dave. :thumb

Menangler - December 9th, 2003 at 04:44 PM

geeezzz thanks guys,
It was a fun project, and when it performs better than you think, its an added bonus.

kombi_kid - December 9th, 2003 at 05:17 PM

rhys
p.s. that whole beetres is awesome gotta love it!

splitbusaustralia - December 9th, 2003 at 05:43 PM

Gees,

I wonder what that puppy has at the flywheel?

When's the first teardown and inspection?

RobK

Menangler - December 9th, 2003 at 07:54 PM

Rob, I had it apart last week to change the big end bearings after oil lighting it at Eastern Creek drags. Just a precaution, they did show signs of running without oil!:o, everything else was fine.

Rhys, it made 143.6 hp @5900rpm at the rear wheels.

kombi_kid - December 9th, 2003 at 08:20 PM

F@#$ing christ mate thats some serious power!!!! i will have to go for a drive with u next time ur up my way!!!
cheers

Craig Torrens - December 10th, 2003 at 04:57 PM

GB315 is the same as a FK89 ??

OvalGlen - February 12th, 2004 at 07:17 PM

Excellent Dave, just wondering what fuel
you run with that 10.8 : 1 compression..?
I would run AvGas, or can you run Prem UL.?

Gracey - February 17th, 2004 at 03:17 PM

Nice:thumb
Just wondering at what revs does this beast make peak torque?

Craig Torrens - February 17th, 2004 at 08:44 PM

Dave, is there any reason you did not have the case face's machined flat ??

This would make sure all barrells are parallel to the crank and that the bases are the equal distance from the case centreline.

Blue74 and 70 Autostik, have you worked out the Valve lift as a % of valve size :D:D
Or should Dave be using 1.4's :D:D

Craig, if you have a close look at the barrell seat you will see that it has been machined, all the deck heights are the same.
