Some pics taken today. Next... remove reduction hubs and go lo. Maybe change wheels too. Anyone got a nice set of original 15'' wheels?

crazyfiggi - December 27th, 2003 at 11:39 PM

very nice:thumb

fish - December 28th, 2003 at 05:26 AM

it's more work ( and money) than you think to go low. i am in the middle of it at the moment. wheee!!! what a job. and bloody dirty too. but should look goood in the end. your bus looks sweet.

tracash242 - December 28th, 2003 at 08:39 AM

mate thats looks so cool, gota love the number plates,:D,

robnjo - December 28th, 2003 at 08:48 AM

yeah that is very nice indeed,as I don't know any thing about kombis, what do reduction hub do and when you lower it without them what happen?
ROB

twoguns - December 28th, 2003 at 09:24 AM

mate... that is looking good. the belt came up well huh!

go low... i think it suits the splits soooo well.

robnjo... hte reduction hubs allowed for lower gear ratios so that you could put a lot of weight in 'em. i had 1.9 ton on the weigh bridge at the tip once and all i had in the back was the little 1200 it came with. had no problem reaching 80klm/h, but couldnt stop for shit with the drums. down side is the top speed is about 80-90 klm/h. take 'em out and you get more, but you drop about 3inches in the rear, so you have to do some work up front.

robnjo - December 28th, 2003 at 09:37 AM

thanks twoguns,I didn't realise how heavy buses are.
thanks
rob

65busser - December 28th, 2003 at 10:30 AM

Hey Fish,
Didn't realise you were in the midst of it. Should take some pics. So how much you reckon you're gonna part with? You're IRSing it aren't you?
They reckon the first time you drive your bus without the hubs, and low, is better than...well, most other things.
Looking forward to the full report mate.
Cheers
Brad

byronbus - December 28th, 2003 at 12:52 PM

That is sweet 65busser...I like low and i like it as is... nice work:thumb

twoguns - December 28th, 2003 at 06:21 PM

robnjo... that figure came about from a tip run. there was just enough room for me. the rest of the bus was filled with wood, rubbish and stuff. i think a standard bus is around 1300kg. could be wrong but close.
65bus... mine is not irs's, i like swing for some strange reason. but still once you up hte brakes and set them lower they are a lot of fun. and the cool factor is huge.:D:cool::D

baybuscamperkid - December 28th, 2003 at 07:19 PM

man, that is one gorgeous bus!

KOM123 - December 28th, 2003 at 08:01 PM

Now that's a nice Bus :thumb

Stealth - December 28th, 2003 at 09:47 PM

Nice one Brad :thumb

When are we all getting together for a BBQ, Split gathering?

65busser - December 28th, 2003 at 10:13 PM

Stealth,
Great Idea. How's next Sunday 4th...BBQ lunch on the Esplanade somewhere. Are there any BBQ's down at Station Pier where we parked when we left for Tasi? Bit short notice. How ya placed? Say 11.00 am to whenever.
Brad

vwtyp2 - December 28th, 2003 at 11:19 PM

hey 65busser :)

if you go without reduction hubs, the best thing to do is put in a Beetle G'box.
the reduction boxes reverse the direction of rotation.
that is you'll have four reverse gears if you keep the kombi g'box and diff.
get yourself some adapter springplates too, so you can bolt the beetle box virtually straight in.
send pmgbus a u2u about his adapter plates thas he does :thumb:thumb

btw, very nice bus.
next stop, slammsville:D

bus356 - December 29th, 2003 at 12:14 AM

very tidy! I want a split :cussing

fish - December 29th, 2003 at 05:12 AM

twoguns, how have you gone low without IRS ? is the front beam lowered or do you have lowered spindles? i now have a front beam out of my 1960 split as i have lowered a 1968 beam and fitted that. What a chore on your own. cheers, fish

VWFOOL - December 29th, 2003 at 07:43 AM

thats a great looking bus

twoguns - December 29th, 2003 at 08:37 PM

used a straight axle conversion from CBB... wanted to keep swing axle! and a set of his discs on the rear. and got a ball joint disc converted beam for the front. which we have just finished narrowing. bus has been raised a little now, though. more practical up here in the bush.

and boy would i love to catch up for one of those barbies, but you guys are just too damn far away. i trying to track down the local splitties, though.

volma1 - December 29th, 2003 at 09:10 PM

Brad you should have asked me for standard 15s at the 50th cavalcade as I had some spares. volma1

65busser - December 29th, 2003 at 09:51 PM

Mate, I wasn't thinking of 'em then. I take it they're gone?
This was a pic I took on the Tasi trip that I thought you might like.
If you've still got those wheels let me know, thanks mate
Brad

volma1 - December 29th, 2003 at 10:44 PM

Have passed some on(still have some odd ones, and may be able to rake up a set) but kept the best for a spare set for mine. May be able to chase up more from peterk as he has the odd few. volma1

volma1 - December 29th, 2003 at 10:46 PM

Sorry forgot, thanks for posting the pic of my trailer, I hope it met with your approval as it is very handy but not used enough. volma1

Brad ,
She is beautiful and a credit to you.
Is the rear bumper the one I sold you?
A workmate saw you on the bridge in Hobart when you where there told me he saw this beautiful kombi and discribed yours. Small world.
Keep up the nice work. Mitchell

65busser - January 6th, 2004 at 11:12 PM

Thanks Mitchell,
Yes that is your bumper. I had it straightened, (as much as possible) 'cos it had quite a bit of bog in it. You wouldn't have picked it would you? I had en early Bay bumper on the bus originally, and the difference in shape between the two is surprising. They look exactly the same at first, but the Bay bumper is quite straight or square across the back, whereas the splitty bumper curves round the rear end. The fit is so much nicer. Worked out well in the end. Thanks again mate.
Brad

kombi_mad - January 8th, 2004 at 03:33 PM

Yes Brad, that bus of yours is looking better and better every week man, good job, and thankyou again for giving me that old bumper of yours. Brad is a very generous man everyone..

Thankyou very much dude.

And "The G" survived the mission to QLD very well in deed. i drove from sydney to Burleigh before i realised it was only on 3 cylinders though...not good for fuel economy...damb leads...

cheers and ill call you in the next couple of days man, im just in the midst of a legal issue, apon the sale of my old beetle as you'll see in the chitchat area.

ashman

Robo - January 8th, 2004 at 06:25 PM
