Bertie the Beetle
bertie_beetle - August 11th, 2004 at 08:24 PM

Hello, long time viewer, first time poster. I have a 1962 1200 12v beetle named Bertie. He runs ok, but is idleing roughly at the moment. He seems to be in pretty good condition, but i know nothing about engines. My dad bought him about five years ago, and he has been sitting motionless under a carport for the last three (the beetle, not my dad). His paintwork is a bit cracked and chipped, and there is some rust on the bonnet and in the corners of the doors, but otherwise the body seems quite good. I'm hoping to get him overhauled and resprayed, but i have to save up more money first. i think he is a great looking car, and look forward to getting him registered again and getting him on the road. I've always loved VWs and now i have one myself!!! Rock On Australia!!

yep. great aint it.

keep on saving and get it on the road.if its only rusty in the doors and surface rust on the bonnet, do the mechanicals first and on the road. feel free to do work on it yourself. i've found that most mechanix repairs are as good as my own (slow) idiots guide approach. if youve got more $ than time, find a old vw specialist.

check the bottom of the front pillars and have a bit of a poke at the botom of these. if the heateter channels are good, you've got a real goodie for a 62.

paint job looks good in the pics, but its quite cracked and chipped. Still, he's in pretty good condition.

bertie_beetle - August 15th, 2004 at 02:47 PM

Hey, I just took these pics about 30 mins ago. Hopefully you can see the rust in the door frame and on the bonnet. Very minor.

bertie_beetle - August 15th, 2004 at 02:48 PM

on the bonnet.

And the champion is here. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

Nice ride. Good to see another member from the pine rivers. Door pillar may have been repaired before as it should have 4 holes at the bottom not 3. The brazil repair panel that fixes this has 3 holes. So clean back carefully to see where repair panel was let in. Good luck!

disco_daz - August 16th, 2004 at 08:09 PM

Hey bertie.

Sweet ride, looks great! you may want to look under the carpet along the heater channel near where the rust is, I had a very similar looking rust patch in my bug and both my heater channels (near the vents) were pretty well rusted out. I hope that yours are cool, just thought that I would let you know.
cheers Daz
