this is how i found it after reading an ad in the tassie trading post for an oval window bug.
oval was sold, but the guy mentioned a ragtop that was in bits but rust free.
sounded good. so this is what a found.
a vw nut with a yard full of cars. new, old, half cuts, water cooled, projects.
the body was good, with only very minor rust in the usual spots.
i had to go back to melbourne, so my girlfriend (who was working in tassie at the time) had it trussed up like the provebial and shipped it over on
the boat
once i got it home and looked closely, i found a few more rust spots.
was glad tho, cos the ragtop was a1 and other than a hit in the front, was straight.
missing guards, and other bits though. thats ok cos its gonna get the custom resto treatment.
nice and straight from the rear too
some rust: corner of screen
more rust: LHS pillar
was hit in the front too.
other than these bits, all was generally well.
needed a fair bit of straightening too.
Kim are you doing it all yourself?
We'll all be waiting to watch the progress :thumb
What colour are you doing?
...Melbourne's going to have some very nice ragtops driving around...
then the car sat under a tarp in the back yard for a while til i worked up the courage (and the help)
bought a 63 which i wrecked
baremetalled the body and the pan (lost the pics of the body)
and PoR 15ed the pan.
nope jen
i have done alot myself. most of the bodywork and now the paint (woo hoo - its in colour) has been done by sasha at Delux custom restos
Cool, nice early one too, is it a 58 or 59?
So the DOVW for you too Kim?
Where's Delux Custom Restos?
Do you have all the parts you need for the resto, or are you still looking?
....always a lot of questions
Looks good for rust not too much
still a good chance for dotvw
progress is way past this, but i am slow to post pics
Whats the body shell a 59 or 60 ??
shell no is 3051309
i have been told that its a 1960, and me checks have confirmed that.
there's been a lot of progress since then, but im gonna keep posting in chronologincal order.
the next pics are unfortunately some time later. (computer crashed so i lost all the pics of the bare metal body and the donor car)
18 months passed. finished uni, procrastinated etc.
by now the pan was painted.
body was baremetalled, and i had sent it off so my chosen repairer.
in the garage, after primer was applied, and on the rotisserie, this is what it looked like.
you can seen how good the body really was, with some extra repairs discovered, but nothing major.
you can see that its a good starting point
if you are gonna do a resto and want it done properly, this is the only way to do it - on a rotiserrie
you can get to all the areas and repairs are easier to do well
... not that i did them myself!

Hey Kim, any more pics of the rotisserie? I would like to make something similar up for when I paint my beetle. Cheers - looking great by the way!!
Alan
man it looks good so far...keep it up:beer:beer:beer
Wow looks a lot like my project, same year too! Except i got semaphores in mine.
That rotisserie looks really handy, i`m a bit jealous of the ragtop
Thants a top find
ok, time moves on and i have decided to fit an narrowed beam (this was about feb this year when it arrived)
got it done by mike at cbb and painted it up myself.
POR15 just like the pan

so after the chapel st cruise on saturday, i thought it was about time to post some more pics
these are pics from about april this year (sorry about the size) and i wanted to post so that the progress and amount of work thats gone into the body
prep and paint can be appreciated.
first: we have the front pillar area prepped, with the rust cut out prior to repairs
check back to this picture later when i post some on how the inner guards were midified to make the narrowed beam fit
(cos i want to run shocks)
ok, here is the underside of the dash after high fill.
again, there have been some major changes in this area, so this is the before pic
thanks to alan (dasdubber) for the inspiriation. i m putting a stereo in under here to.
but dont worry, it'll look pretty different too
