Working on leo's ARS
splitbusaustralia - August 21st, 2004 at 05:20 PM

Articulated Rear Suspension! (still think someone should
try and get this term into Volksworld so we can all have
a bit of a giggle....).

Anyway, removed leo's tranny and reduction boxes etc
and cut out the transmission 'horns' ... (I didn't paint(rustbullet) the underneath back bit cos I still had
some welding/fitting to do....)

Measured up and welded in some of Creative Engineering's
IRS chassis legs....

I did mock up the springplates and control arms and everything
fitted up quite well. A 2-3 mm gap between the control arms
and springplates but even gap both sides and nice'n'straight in terms of alignment. Forgot
to take pix but will do next time I put em in and post....springplates and control arms
are the 'short' ones from a 1970 bus (thanks Dave Becker). The
early springplates and about 400mm long while the later are
around 430 mm long if you ever need to know the difference...

You have to fit the bus nosecone to the IRS tranny (in my case L bug box) to get a mount that goes into the bus. There's
a factory mod that's worth doing to the nosecone while you
have it out. Early type2 nosecones blow a LOT of oil through
the breather hole. If you mill a 9 mm slot in the nose cone
webbing this doesn't happen (this was a design change made
in the casting of later nosecones....)

Stock early nose cone (from behind)

And with the slot milled in the webbing to allow oil to return
to the box more freely.

Test fitting the L bug box.

And mocking up a type IV case so I can do some mounts
for the rear engine mount bar...

And finally, boxing the rear chassis section for the engine
bar mounts. I'll drop a 1/4" plate of this to make mounts.

Gotta travel for the day job tomorrow so that's all folks!

Very nice Rob. You wouldn't consider making those gearbox forks yourself?
