my 68 twin cab(update)
david - August 21st, 2004 at 06:20 PM

i flew up to brisbane and picked this up on tuesday and drove it 1600 km back to albury not without a few little hiccups though I was coming into a roundabout a hit the brakes and the peddle decided to hit the floor , managed to avoid the guy in the roundabout by a few feet ,i nearly had the car for about 4 hours , i drove it as far as mullimbimby via byron and went to see george at G & N Automotive and he made a new pipe up ( it split) thanks george if you need a vw fixed up there he's your man then driving at night the electricals gave up the ghost a few times ,a little tricky as there was no moon and no lights at 100 kph i can tell you, then it decided to spring an oil leak near sydney but it did make it back okay i will post some pics of the progress

buzzbug - August 21st, 2004 at 08:10 PM

dude that is a great looking twincab, just don't know about the splitty style paint job on the nose.
But it is a great colour and looks very neat.
Congrats and good luck with it.
Lee.

david - August 21st, 2004 at 08:18 PM

it has a splitty fromt grafted in to it ,i am not sure about that nose yet ,i have a smashed bay and i may change it back but it has a few other little things about it so maybe i will leave it ,i used to be indesisive but now i am not so sure

buzzbug - August 21st, 2004 at 08:21 PM

wow, thats a bit of a bummer, depending on your view of it of course.

Oh well, you do only have to please one person, and if your happy then thats all that matters.

I might drop in and see it next time i have to go to bandianna for a course.

TROUBLECAB!

jenz58 - August 22nd, 2004 at 05:27 PM

Same colour as your avatar kombi...wow.....

So this dual cab has been around by the sounds David....or at least known

A checkered history?

Hope it's not too much trouble an you enjoy it....

How was the drive home in it...OK?...It runs well?

BenettonVW - August 22nd, 2004 at 06:37 PM

Sounds like a lot of work to graft something like that in.. Hmm.. Dunno if it is something I would have done, but obviously someone thought it could be kinda cool, and went for it.

Is that a fuel tank on the back Dave?

frog - August 22nd, 2004 at 06:51 PM

I Think putting a split screen front on a bay is against all Volkswagen laws as they have done in the U.K. and Japan,it is for people who can't afford a split and looks like shit........But this I like, seems to have the right colour and ride height, there is something about it so keep it the way it is cos it's different.
Being a 68,it is almost like the factory crossover prototype model.

Andy42 - August 22nd, 2004 at 10:17 PM

I can tell you the front does look better in real life and it does grow on you as well. As for those who say it should not be done how many parts of different models are you running on your vehicals????? And oh david yeh we forgot to put in the original fuel tank it is still near me shed :( Glad you made it back without to many dramas.

jenz58 - August 22nd, 2004 at 11:07 PM

I think the front works OK...don't need to be purists all the time....The line follows through from sides...and the V front is cool.....

:thumb
Nice double cab!!!!

PS not a fan of faking a splitty but this one looks like a top job (dont change it :) )

Andy42 - August 23rd, 2004 at 07:54 AM

Ahh if they are different to a standard tank then no I do not have one:( the one I have here is a normal kombi one.

t2 - August 26th, 2004 at 08:02 PM

i know this is an old post but i really like this bus ,very cool looks almost like a split , i think in the uk they call them baysplits.
the only thing i would change is those rear wheel arch mods, :beer

sgetty - August 26th, 2004 at 09:43 PM

the tank that i pulled out of that twin cab (rooted one) was exactly the same as the one i gave u andy, if thats the one u had in your shed, yeah:beer and the one i gave u was outa a kombi . i sat them next to each other and matched but thats only if the one i pulled outa there was the original........savy:D
deon

72TWINCAB - August 27th, 2004 at 08:42 AM

I love it. Keep the front for sure. Looking forward to your progress shots. Good to see it's gone to a good home.

lobus - August 27th, 2004 at 02:11 PM

here is what looks like a factory setup that would be good NOT to copy...what do youse reckon?

byronbus - August 28th, 2004 at 07:21 AM

Saw you in byron david, didnt get a chance to say hi...everytime i saw the yoot someone was looking at her, creates quite a stir...

Keep the pics coming...

vwrx - August 30th, 2004 at 10:53 PM

I think that bus came from Adelaide .A friend of mine had one the same with a grafted kombi rear door on the cab also.Does this one have that aswell?.It was originally orange and white.

57kombi - September 1st, 2004 at 09:35 AM

Yes Kurt, its Dans old one.
Was a good bus, just needded a bit of fettling.
Was orange and white with a steel split front grafted on.

Cheers
Dave

vw_addict - September 1st, 2004 at 10:00 AM

i reckon it looks sweet man!!!!

pete wood - September 2nd, 2004 at 08:50 PM

Man I didn't even the nose to start with. I thought it was a split til I had a second look. The back door is interesting too, Man, I almost hurt my neck when I did a double take at that.

Don't worry about the purists, they are are just purile!
:D

vwtyp2 - September 2nd, 2004 at 09:56 PM

good luck with it Dave, man, did I ever put some work into that, as you can probably tell.
Hopefully you'll be enjoying it as much as I did.
I wish I still had the pics taken the day after I picked it up
I'm glad to see it is being kept alive.
