FREE Kombi ....
Da Wiz - January 6th, 2003 at 09:57 AM

Well here is teh kombi i won at the Redrock Hotel competition ... lovre the mags :) Don't ask me whats in it as i have only just got and haven't got any paperwork yet ...

Looks cool, though the transmission is up teh creek, i have to push the gear stick down to get first and second gear, and even that takes at least 5 shots to get it :( Reverse gear has still not been found ... and i have had 5 ppl with a collective 40+ years expereince wit kombis trying to find it ... any ideas ??!!?!

True, it was 'free' but still i thought they would of had to have given me a road registered vehicle, (its just been reregistered)ie. with all gears, windsreen wipers, side mirror is missing etc. ... any thoughts ...

Well here it is ... not bad for buying a coldie :)

:P:D:cool:

Don't know about the graphics - just cruised into town and all these young guys come up to me thinking that i'm giving away gear - like the radio stations do :) I tell them i only have room for the ladies :D

It was only $30 to fill the tank up yesterday, and it took roughly half a tank to get to the beach and back - roughly 80km's, is this right - cause it seemed like a lot of fuel! What is the fuel consumptioon like in these things, it feels like a big engine. More grunt than my dubby :)

Pls explain - Cheers Isaak

Hi, Heres my suggestions for your gear probs.
can be just linkage and probably is one of these areas
-Coupling between shift rod and front of tranny. this is sort of a rubber universal joint.Have a look at it while someone is moving the gearlever form side to side in neutral If it is not transmitting full rotation, replace it (Cheap part)
-bush supporting the front of the shift rod under the gearlever check it out should be obvious
-gearshift stoplate adjustment(but dont do this until you check the above and rectify.
This is a little plate with tabs located under the cover at the base of the gearstick.worth pulling out to check for distortion and weld up any cracks.once back together with the tranny in 2nd and the mounting bolts slightly loose, position the whole assembly so the gerlever points right and then push the stop plate tab so the left side of the stop plare buts up to the gearlever easier done than said.
On my first Kombi the rear coupling was gone despit the PO having taken it to a vw delership to sort out shifting problems

Thanks Jeff, the coupling was gone, so i replaced that as well as doing the bush, and regreasing the stop plate (shit of a thing putting it back) though now with reverse you don't have to puswh down it just at the very left of the shift ... where as in my dubby second is on the very left of shift, i tried changing the shift plate around but to no avail ...

Oh well, Redrock hotel is paying for some $96 worth of parts to make it closer to roadworthy ... wouldn't pay to get it serviced though - dammit :(

Cheers Isaak

hmmm.....15L for 80kms....thats 6km/L. if it is a $1 per L.

Dont expect MUCH more than that. I took my new acquisition(sp?) for a couple 100km cruise on the last couple of days and prolly got around 8 and a bit ish. I get just under 7 in real short drive stuff round the home/school/shops.
Going to wack a set of IDF/Dells on soon and she should improve it

Nice looking van....just try and heat the decals(?) off,,,, paints ok. Body looks great!
What is the interior like?

heh heh heh .... i just went to your link and Tripod said i was the 10,000,000 person to visit a tripod site and won a hoilday to Mexio.........to bad it was out of Florida!
:cry

Check out this thread about kombi fuel consumption: http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=2876

It certainly stands out, and graphics do suit kombis really well - especially surf or hippy themes.:D

As blue said, I'd be taking a heat gun to the signwriting if possible. (ie. assuming that the graphics are not vinyl, and the signwriting is. :)) Wait until the pub has paid for as much work to be done on it as possible though, before you remove the stickers!

Hey, maybe they should sponsor you long term.... it wouldn't look very good for the pub if you keep breaking down on the side of the road, would it? (You could park it and make it look like its broken down! Hehehe)

68AutoBug - January 12th, 2003 at 09:57 PM

The first thing I usually do with every Beetle I drive is adjust the gear lever plate, so REVERSE cannot be engaged without PRESSING the lever down.... So Many people drive VWs with the plate maladjusted.... I can't stand it.... Sorry, I can't help with a KOMBI... never had one... although My Son looks like buying one in the future....

I was going to Claim that FREE KOMBI .... ... Now I'm just too upset to talk..... even in Yellow....:D:D:D:D:mad::bounce

Da Wiz - January 13th, 2003 at 09:49 AM

i've flipped, reversed, and swapped that reversing plates so many times, my head is starting to hurt, every time though reverse is just to the left and down ... in the dubby thats second, and i do prefer pushing reverse down and around ... and ideas ... though i am know getting used to second being in the middle ... ie when slowing down i'm not sticking it in reverse :)
