My UK '66 Resto-Cal Bug
crazydaze - November 27th, 2004 at 10:15 AM

Nice site guys, I have posted these pics of my UK '66 Resto-Cal bug on the General Forum on a thread, but I guess they probably sit better here!

Looks like I have another cool forum to check up on now. One of my mates from the UK is over in Oz at the moment and put me onto this site......cool as!!! watch it though, he seems to have made it a personal quest to buy all your knackered Ovals!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some pics of my '66 1300 UK Resto-Cal Bug. I have owned the car for 9 years, at last it's getting to how I have always wanted it, Bodywork and paint (bare metalled) was restored in 1995 soon after I bought the car however the accessories/stance have been added over the past few years as and when I could afford it. The 90mm narrowed beam is probably the major addition in the past few months.

Cheers

Alex

looks great mate
front sits nice ,do you get wheel scrub still or was 90mm
good
do you have 4.5's on the front and 5.5 on the back cause thats the look i want!!!

crazydaze - November 27th, 2004 at 10:32 AM

No scrubbing AT ALL!!!! It's running 5.5j Polished Empi 5 replicas all round, the front is a narrowed (90mm) balljoint beam with sway away adjusters and CB Dropped Spindles, Shock towers have been modified and there are no inner wing or headlamp bowl modifications. Front tyres are 135 Firestones. The rear is turned one spline, and has dropped nicely (approx 4 inches);) tyres are 195/65's for the nice FAT/skinny GFK stance!!!

Oh yeah, as far as I know, you can't get 4.5j Empi/Eagle/ 5 spoke replicas, the only "True" 4.5j's for a wide 5 lug bug are GENUINE Fuchs 4.5 earlies, Porsche 356 4.5j's and Empi Sprintstar 4.5j's. All the replicas of BRM's, and Fuch's that are 4.5j have the inch taken out of the BACK of the wheel, thus the track of the car will remain the same as a 5.5j version - be warned!!!! Also the CB performance beams that are narrowed 2 inches will still cause some headaches with tyre rub if you use the dropped spindles as well, plus you would not get the real "tucked under" stance.

This thread will probably be of use/interest to you!!!:

Resto64 - November 28th, 2004 at 12:27 AM

yer it is
hey if i get the beam narrowed 2 inches with no drop spindals will the empi 5's still rub ?
will the 5's bolt straight on ?

shmikuk - November 28th, 2004 at 02:56 AM

We've just been looking into this on an early 65.....its gonna be tight! it all should be cool with the wheels straight ahead, but there could be some clearance issues on lock! this is with 135/15s. Smart car tyres 145/65/15s would help but dont quite look right IMHO!;) All depends how low you want togo, and what tyres etc. Apparently American Eagle Empi 5 Replicas have a better offset than others!
Ask Andylham on restowagenuk, as he has eagle 5s on his 58 with a 2" narrowed beam at the mo! ;)

shmikuk - November 28th, 2004 at 03:04 AM

DOH! Just read that again, and you said "NO DROP SPINDLES"! Should be OK, as the one we've been looking at had em. Adds about half inch per side to the track!!!:blush

But they VASTLY improve the ride comfort ;)

When you narrow a beam, remember that the adjusters firm the suspension up as you wind the ride height down, add to this the effect of narrowing the torsion bars which stiffens the suspension further as the loads are transferred through a less pliable set of leaves (they have less "travel" in them the more you shorten them). So losing 2 and a half inches of suspension travel with NO loss of ride quality is a useful addition in helping to prevent shaking your fillings out!!!!!!!!! it will also shake your partners airbags less so there is a down side to them :)

They are bouncing! BUT they are a pair at the front and back;)

If ya interested in a pair of your own:

I don't know how legal they are in OZ, but here in the UK my mate just got fined 60 pounds and 3 points endorsed on her licence 'cos the policeman said he thought they were dangerous!!!
