5.5 inche narrowed beam
do you have to modify the body to get that in???

shmikuk - November 29th, 2004 at 06:41 AM

Oh Yes!!! basically cut off the shock towers from the beam and weld shock mounts onto the inner wings and reinforce it by attaching it to the inner box section which supports the fuel tank!
It does however mean that the shocks forces are amplified thru the body somewhat, so it makes everything vibrate when you hit potholes etc!
The American boys dont run shocks, so they can get round it! Unfortunately(?) we have to, so needs must!
You can get 5"out by mounting the shocks thru a fabbed up sleeve/nut affair in the box section which only requires drilling one hole in the inner wing, and a small amount of cutting n welding in the box section area! This works really well!;)

Turbo54 - November 29th, 2004 at 08:38 AM

Do you know where I can find out how more info on the sleeve/ nut style as I want to narrow my 54 beam 4" to get my 17X7's tucked away nicely but dont want to cut up the body for future preservation. Any info, kit info anything will be great.
Thanks
T54

shmikuk - November 30th, 2004 at 05:59 AM

Theres no kit available, we just threw ideas about until we came up with a solution! Email me, n I'll see if i can sketch something up for ya! 17x7s. Whew, no wonder you're narrowing it!;)

VWFREAK - November 30th, 2004 at 09:07 AM

shmikuk - December 2nd, 2004 at 05:42 AM

;) Turbo 54...I will get back tou you soon!
Ms Cabrio, its the Original VW Bahama Blue!

Thanks very much for all the kind words about our car. We bought her pretty much as she looks now, although "the devil is in the details" as they say! We've done a fair bit to her, including loadsa cool period accessories:
"rare" Blue helphos searchlight, safety star, NOS Happich tailpipe embellisher, vent shades, NOS kerb feelers, tunnel tidy, shifter lock, Brexton door trays, Brexton Picnic set(s), 50s n 60s Vintage coolers, period suitcases etc etc.
Its as much fun finding this stuff as fitting it and using it! Just really looking forward to finding those last few parts and getting the Judson Supercharger on ready for next season! 0-60 in 15 secs instead of 31, and all from a 1200cc....How cool is that?!;)

Oh and here she is on a rare occasion where she went out without the roofrack on!

That looks shit without the rack, get it back on:duh:kiss:thumb

Alex

p.s. you knows it;)

Turbo54 - December 2nd, 2004 at 05:19 PM

Sorry crazydaze, I disagree, looks hot without the rack but each to there own. Besides without the rack it's something different! Racks are almost as common as commodores!

crazydaze - December 3rd, 2004 at 08:24 AM

Hi Guy's, it's Ok ;) E knows how I feel about the car without the rack on:P

It looks real cool with or without, but much better with IMHO! plus there's absolutely nowhere for any luggage for fear of damaging the paint under the front luggage area, it's THAT mint, so the rack is used regularly out of necessity, as well as looking cool!

- E, got any pics you can post? - as for commodores, are they what we call Vauxhall's/Opel's over here? we get the big old Holden V8 things only over here:duh:D

Alex

Turbo54 - December 3rd, 2004 at 08:29 AM

It's all good resto, all I was trying to say is its whatever you want do to your car. I like almost everything and respect whatever peoples choices are whether to rack on or rack off for example. Your car looks great with all the accessories on and I think that the above pic with the rack off looks hot. It's all up to everyones personal choice. The only problem I have with the VW scene is that when you embark on a project people straight away ask " what look are you doing callook, resto etc." which is making everyones project fall into a bracket or category. Me personally want to break new ground with my car and that is why it's not falling into one of these looks. So I say go for it! Respect others choices and keep it fun.
Resto, I will go cruising anyday in your car, rack or no rack!
Heath

Spot on attitude mate

trying to "define" a look is one sure way to piss a lot of people off, build your car how YOU want it to look, that's what makes the aircooled Vdub scene so friendly (in the uk anyway;)?) people generally enjoy all vdubs and the social scene that surrounds 'em, it does'nt matter what a car may or may not look like, or what accessories it has or does not have, so long as it's VW & aircooled - apart from Gold 1303's JOKE!:thumb

Alex;)

shmikuk - December 4th, 2004 at 10:32 AM

:duh This is what Crazydaze is on about....although its even tidier under there now as I completely re-wired it from scratch to lose some nasty repairs, and miles of insulation tape!

This car defo fits right into that resto-cal category, but Im with you with the whole pigeon holing thang! Build what you want, do waht YOU like! I hate all this "you gotta have this part and those wheels and that accessory" crap! I aint GOTTA do anything unless I want to!!!!!;)

I gotta admit, it was weird seeing Cabby the first time without the rack...it looked almost roof chopped and stretched!!! I like both with and without. Looks really different !!

I think we got Commodores as Vauxhall/Opel Carltons or Senators! Then Omegas! The only cool Vauxhall is really a Holden and thats the Monaro(?)!!
Hey resto, we may be poms, but you cant hear us whinging!;)

Turbo54 - December 5th, 2004 at 07:21 PM

Hey Guys,
Resto and me are just friends mucking about, he's has thesame attitude as me,
do what you like how you like when you like,
Turbo54

shmikuk - December 6th, 2004 at 07:51 AM

Thats cool! Not taking it all too seriously is whats kept me in the scene for nearly 15 years! ;)
Heres a shot of the interior, where you may spot the odd accessory or two!

Fossil - December 9th, 2004 at 12:53 PM

every reason to :thumb and what a  ride. Looks better without the rack :bounce

Turbo54 - December 9th, 2004 at 01:31 PM

Hi shmlkuk,
any news on narrowing my beam sleeve nut style,
Thanks
Turbo54

shmikuk - December 11th, 2004 at 09:16 PM

hey heath, did you get my email?

thanks fossil! I think it works well with and without the rack so we'll just keep swapping it on and off every now n then! We try and rotate the mountain of accessories a bit too, so it doesnt have the same accessories on at Every show! ;)

The latest fitment is a NOS Bug deflector I picked up in the summer!

shmikuk - December 11th, 2004 at 09:32 PM

For those that like her without the roofrack!

Turbo54 - December 13th, 2004 at 08:19 AM

Yeah I got your email, Thanks. I can work out what your talking about but dont know what MOT would think. I'll proberly narrow it 2.5 and take it through, then pull it back out and narrow it some more after that. I think a set of stand offs now would look awesome on your car. especially on the above shot, Thanks for the info,
T54
