57 Chook Shed - December 3rd, 2004 at 09:41 PM

Talking to Aaron from ClassicVW(pacific)S.A the other night, I was saying about my old 181 "Trekker" that I used to own in the UK.
I said I`d send him some pics of it but hey, you may aswell all see `em.
Cheers
Graham.

Depends where you come from.
Things are the Yankee version.

57 Chook Shed - December 3rd, 2004 at 09:54 PM

This was at The All Types Show in North Wales, which is near Britain.
Note my home brewed "Engine Lid Barbie", as featured in Total VW issue number somethin.
Too many Spliffs one would suggest.

57 Chook Shed - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:01 PM

Close-up of the Barbie.
Some faces there you might recognise Dave??
And yes, that is the lead singer of Simply Red.
Cheers
Graham.

dragbug - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:40 PM

Was this before the lowering fad hit?

57kombi - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:44 PM

Yes Ken was the lead singer of Simply Red.
And Adele too.

Brings back memory's.
Took my LHD bay to the All types show in 97.

Cheers
Dave

57 Chook Shed - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:44 PM

No, I was trying to start a new Fad where everything is stock height, it never really took off!!

dragbug - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:49 PM

Maybe when we are all 60 odd years of age we can return to the stock in the clouds height......
Hang on ....it would be easier for me to get in a lowered car than up into a high bus.......
Just solved my problem.Roll on the grey years.

57kombi - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:50 PM

Migh thave to raise my bus, put a 1200 back in with reduction hubs, replace the ally pop-outs with steel and paint it one colour and dump the deluxe trim, dont want to be accused of starting a fad.

Cheers
Dave

68AutoBug - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:51 PM

I read where 400 RHD type 182s were produced and sent to the UK where they were called the "TREKKER"...

I don't care what they were called....
You have owned a part of History.....
I haven't even seen one....
and Would love one....

Did Yours have IRS rear end or the reduction hubs at the rear??? I believe Yours would have the Reduction boxes as the IRS type 181s were all LHD and made in Mexico... after 1973.... answered my own question....

You are sure ONE LUCKY DUDE..... Graham....

How could You sell it????

I,m sure these cars would have sold in numbers in Australia...
I read in a book today that the type 181-182s were designed for the military - and the cost wasn't an issue...
I don't know whether to believe that one.... or not:):)

Did Yours have type 181 or 182 on the plate??? Lee

68AutoBug - December 3rd, 2004 at 10:53 PM

I just saw the Engine lid Barbie....
I was wondering what funny shaped barbies they have in the UK.... then I read the post....

Now thats surely different.....

57 Chook Shed - December 4th, 2004 at 09:44 AM

Mine was IRS with Limited Slip Diff.
It had 181 on the plate.
It was a type 181 (LHD) made in Mexico, spent most of it`s life in Cyprus and then moved to the UK. It was used by a film crew, had a camers mounted on the back at some point. I bought it off the 3rd UK owner.
I had to sell it coz of the shipping cost to OZ on top of the extortionate ammount you have to pay to move here (although it`s a pretty cool place, apart from no Bug Jam).
There are loads of 182`s in Indonesia.
I know where I`m going in a few years time!! Fly to Bali, catch the ferry to Darwin (or hitch a ride with the boat people) and then drive it down to Adelaide!!!
Cheers
Graham.

bugboymatt - December 4th, 2004 at 10:42 AM

182's in indo land huh !!! I wouldn't mind one i can tell ya's.

Kai.A. - December 4th, 2004 at 07:54 PM

i remember the 181 and the bbq from all types, i was camped about 10 meters away from you, i didn't see much else at that show i was far too hammered.... didn't even manage to sleep in the tent, just passed out on the ground outside it.

i think that was the year that someone was doing crazy jumps in a yellow bug in the camping field, i heard lots of snapping/cracking sounds!!!

great stuff

Resto64 - December 4th, 2004 at 08:22 PM

AAAAHHHHHHHHHH
more than one spliff i think !!!!

shmikuk - December 4th, 2004 at 08:44 PM

Schweet 181 dude! Cant help thinking Ive seen it slammed and blue at Bug Jam now!
They rock dont they! Everyone stops n stares, no one knows what they are, and you cant get a better convertible!
Heres our old 181, ex berlin wall patrol car. Bug beam n box =instant slamming, 1641 with Kadron40s, 4.5 and 5.5 Sprintstars! 90mph everywhere, the screen n roof only ever went up if it was raining or parked up! Bugs in the teeth...the only way to travel! Really miss it now! Apparently the new owner is building it into a full on body lifted US style dune basher! ;)

HEY 57 get a grip! no fad started where you began. As I said, alot of bus people are just sheep. You deserve credit for doing a nice job but you're a wanker to put down or discredit anyone elses if they dont do exactly what youve done or if they dont want to follow the crowd...especially when its an original restoration. If this description fits you then have a good think about it. If you feel it doesnt then you can toss this. Just notice how you come across. The day I meet you drooling all over a og bus at a meet I'll be waiting to rub your nose in it.;)

Final line too... If you disagree with someone its better to say it directly to them rather than bad mouth them in another thread.

scuse my interruption in this thread. 181's are HOT
Merry Christmas

57 Chook Shed - December 5th, 2004 at 12:51 PM

shmikuk, I sold it to a guy who was gonna do hill climbs in it or something. If you do see it at any of the shows and its got the same reg (KEH 885N) then take a pic for me. Like the sound of Slammed and Blue!!
The All Types is a great show if anyone is ever in the UK around May, Kai, that wasn`t you who tripped over the Barbie was it?? Or maybe it was that dude in the yellow Bug gettin it sideways!! Whatever, it was on it`s side the next morning.
Just trying to think what happened to it when I moved??? I think I gave it to Matt or Tuck, it`s still a bit of a blurr.
Cheers
Graham.

Kai.A. - December 5th, 2004 at 04:57 PM

naa, i didn't trip over the barbie, i barely moved for the entire show, we put our tent up and then got smashed, woke up the next day......

i used to like it at the rugby club, had a real downbeat feel, not like the big shows....

57kombi - December 6th, 2004 at 09:20 AM

I think the way I want if you dont like it I dont care.
I dont follow others and I dont like standard height busses, That is my choice and thats it.
You must be the wanker by saying you would rub my nose in the fact I might like a standard one one day.
Dont think so .

Another with too much time on their hands!!

Cheers
Dave

VWFREAK - December 6th, 2004 at 11:19 AM

Who care where your from or what you call them. The simple fact is, it's a sweet ase vw and a part of history.

I still want one.

57 Chook Shed - December 6th, 2004 at 03:10 PM

Kai,
Yeah the rugby club was cool as. It`s pretty good in the grounds of the castle now but like you say it was more downbeat.
Did you ever go on the "Coastal Breeze" Cruise?? It was on the year before I moved here or maybe the year before that come to think of it (spliffs). That went from Chester services on the M56 to Prestatyn, we all kinda parked up and talked about the cars and stuff then went over to the rugby club, had a fire and a load of beers and stuff. Good times.
Cheers
Gra.

Kai.A. - December 6th, 2004 at 06:03 PM

no, i never got to that one.

i went to the show at the rugby club twice, the one in the photo's and the one after, then went to the first couple at the castle.

i was a member of all types for a few years and was part of a mass exodus when money started to become an issue, put it this way, a few club members made a lot of money from the work of everyone else.....

did you go to the rugby club the year after, when it rained?
i spent all of saturday in that little field between the entrance and the camping field with a shovel and a pile of gravel, just chucking it down there so everyone could get in/out..... the blisters were huge!

still got utterly hammered that night tho, then up again a 6:30am to stand at the gate all day.....

57 Chook Shed - December 7th, 2004 at 09:22 AM

Man I`m sure we must have met at some point.
We just sat in the Flying Shite (red oxide ragtop Bay) and did narcotics that year when it was raining.
We had the ex-Argentinian War army tent strapped to the side of the Bus, it was a real party tent that night, one of the only dry spots!

57 Chook Shed - December 7th, 2004 at 09:39 AM

This was taken at the first of the All Types Show at Bodelwydan Castle.
Broke my heart selling my `62 Bug.
Don`t know if you ever saw it? It had a full Safety Devices Rollcage, Sparco Bucket Seats, Sabelt Harnesses, Autometer Tacho, Berms just needed paint and a bigger motor. It had the 1600tp motor out of the Bus driving the original 1200 gearbox so it had a bit of grunt, needed more though.

57kombi - December 7th, 2004 at 10:25 AM

I went to the first one to.
With Ken, Adele, and the Mesrsey side lot.
Had my LHD bay, kettle came in handy, wasnt too warm.

Cheers
Dave
