Lemon Meringue Back to 89 Pastel Cal Look Bug
Backto89 - December 31st, 2004 at 08:19 AM

Lemon Meringue was built in 1994, it first appeared on the U.K V-dub scene in 1996 after being taken off the road and subjected to a restoration. The first show that it was Entered into BUGSTOCK it received two awards for Post 67 Cal Look & Best Interior. It also received another trophy at VW Action at Stoneleigh Warks for Post 67 Cal Look, not bad considering it placed first in its first three shows for 1996. In 1997 it was selected for the Volksworld Show at Sandown Park, covered with lots of lemons! Lemon Meringue was shown throughout the 1997 show season throughout the country, and picked up two more awards at Dub Daze, Post 67 Cal Look, and Best Display. In 1998 it was again selected to be shown at the Volksworld Show, this time I covered the area around the car with cotton wool, and left a Lemon Meringue pie for the judges!. At the Bug Jam 1998 I was approached by Colin Burnham, Colin wanted to feature Lemon Meringue in a new book that Colin was putting together
For those that have seen the car before you will note one major change and that is the rear lights. The teardrops have now gone and have been replaced with 1200 lights with all red lenses incorporating Blue Dots (Thanks, to Jim. Who helped out to get the car through the MOT). The rest of the car remains how it was shown back in 1996. The main concept of the car is the Cal Look style, but the style that was worldwide around 89, pastel color, slammed ride, Porsche alloys, and a detailed engine. The car is a 1974 1200 salon; it has been highly modified, with four new wings, long bonnet and decklid to make the car look like a pre 67. A few bodymods and shaved trim/handles, and countless tricks, which you would expect from a car like this. The Interior has been retrimed in Lemon & Grey, which features Mazda seats, this interior has been shown in Street Machine and Volksworld in another car by the name of Lemon Bavois. Lemon Meringue is fully carpeted in grey. The steering wheel is a Thump! Thump! stainless steel wheel, and the speedos been redesigned to show the inner workings (swatch style). A Scat Dragfast shifter and chrome handbrake finish of the interior touches (enough to gain a trophy for best interior), theres also a stereo hidden in there as well. The choice of wheels are Porsche alloys (FUCHS), which have been highly polished and restored back to how they would have looked on a 911. The fronts are 14s and the rears 15s; centrecaps finish of the wheels, which are bolted to redrilled hubs by Jay Townsend. The suspension features Sway-Away adjusters with caster shims & M7a Bugpack shocks, lowered ball joints finish off the suspension details. and the rear has been lowered by one spline. The engine is a 1600cc single port, with hidden carb by Jay Townsend (inlet manifold is from , ex Darrin Jacobs Targa), a 009 dizzy and blue coil have been added and paint & chrome detail. Exhaust is a Turbo hideaway. The reason why the wires havent been hidden is because a one off dome enclosure was going to be built from fiberglass to encase the engine, but time & money ran out before this could be done. Paint is 2pak Meringue yellow, and the underside has been smoothrited black.

The car now is back off the road undergoing a transformation to make a Back to 87 Looker.
