Kombi for the keepin (One Year Update)
DoNkEy - March 28th, 2005 at 11:08 PM

hehe

well this is my kombi, cheers to dasdubber for selling it to me :)

Had it for a few months now but yesterday we (Dad and I) had the chance to finally put the rebuilt engine in! :)

As you will see from the pics, most things in the engine where replaced. Interesting being my first engine rebuild :D

...and after we finally got it all in and set up. She started ...with a bit of encouragment...first time :)

but anyways prepare to be spammed with pics. (not 56k friendly )

Andy - March 29th, 2005 at 11:23 AM

Sweet, how about some details on what you did/used for the re-built?

VWENVY - March 29th, 2005 at 11:31 AM

Never seen a donk pulled up like that before - looks like it'd be a bit easier that the whole jack and twist method! :D
Did you drop the back of the box and hook up the engine-box first, then lift in?

kombikim - March 29th, 2005 at 02:15 PM

I like the way you "lifted" the engine in

Fossil - March 30th, 2005 at 12:23 PM

to start with you will have to excuse my language used..i am not up with all the right words n lingo yet :)

Replaced...Barrels, pistons, valves, valve guides and all seals.

we did everything but replace the valve guides (couldnt get them out ). The people we got to do it where kind enough to clean the heads for us...soooo clean i couldnt believe it!

Everything else we did ourselves, my dad has rebuilt many engines in his life but this was his first 2l kombi.

Was interesting putting all the tinware ect on cause we got it in pieces so it was one big jigsaw puzzle :)

didnt drop the box back, just lifted the engine and slid it into the box and bolted.

I had an 1800 auto once with a broken kickdown switch. The guy who had before me put a toggle switch in pretty much that spot. You'd flick for going up hills. We used to call it the 'nitro switch' :D

chenko - May 13th, 2005 at 05:27 PM

:D

DoNkEy - June 23rd, 2005 at 10:05 AM

the seats aint pretty, but they are all there. Maybe i will have the patience to give them a real good clean. Nothing seem to get the dirt out of em! Nothing a set of seat covers won't fix though :P

76camper - June 23rd, 2005 at 05:53 PM

thats a good looking bus! I did my 1st rebuilt about 6 months ago aswell. Didnt do any work on the heads ourselves tho. Very intresting, learnt ALOT about the engine and how to fix it when it breaks down. Hope all goes well. Bus looks excellent

General_Failure - July 8th, 2005 at 11:17 AM

That is a very nice bus. Loved the engine. very shiny.

It looks like a more pro way of the way I put my motor back in. Instead of the setup you had, I used old car batteries on either side of the inspection hole with my towbar bridging between them. The towbar had a winch attached to the middle of it, which was attached to the engine. Never again.

Good job on reassembling the tinware. It can be confusing.

DoNkEy - September 29th, 2005 at 10:05 PM

ahh well she is registered!!!! and boy has it been fun :S

had a problem with a few seals in the engine. First the pushrods..then the rocker covers and even now the rockercover is still leaking (just a little). Its always fun when ur heater boxes have got oil in them and smoke starts pouring out of the dash :thumb

Anyways a trip out to Micks today had her roadworthied..after he jokingly offered to buy it :D

Still plenty to do!!!

-Currently only a 2 seater, but will aventually be an 8
seater
-stereo (as soon as i can afford it)
-a few little bits of surface rust to have a look at
-New seatbelts
etc etc...

anyways a pic to show off (excuse the camera phone)

Well its been a year now since I have had my kombi on the road (I know cause rego is due :() and me and Jonah (the kombi) have had heaps of adventures.

Been up and down the coasts of queensland and nsw a few times Clocked about 15000 kms. He's been reliable and good to me. I thought I would post a few pics that i found on my phone of some of its past adventures. I only got a few at the mo but be assured more will come when i find them. I have sorta neglected this thread :P

The next pics are some of the sound system, a painting job I did and a few of the places i decided to actually take a picture.

got 2 now (had 3 at one stage) :) They are spread around the family.

Cut back on the cars...
Use to have 1 T3
2 T2's
3 t1's 1303's

+ other random cars.

now just T3, T2, 2xt1's
It is not recommended to own this many cars in suburbia when all you have is a carport :thumb

DoNkEy - September 28th, 2006 at 07:13 PM

Hasn't been all fun and games

Been egg'd twice (it took the paint off the first time)
