Finished replacing the battery tray.
So the engine lid carrier panel is repaired. Both trays have been replaced and both corners rust repaired and straightened. Also welded up all the
extra holes in the bulkhead. I know the tailights aren't correct but they'll do until I find the correct 'bubble' tailights (for
a price I can actually pay)....
Finished Barney's barn door. Put in many hours rust repairing and straightening this - drove me bezerk!
Welded up all the holes in the roof (sunroof was covered with metal sheet and screwed down with a zillion self-tappers). Straightened a few dints as
well.
Started underneath. Thinking about planting potatoes in the fall-out! About what I expected - I'm actually I'm very pleased that the
chassis rails are solid!

hey rob
looking sweet hows the floor sections going? you bringing mine upto the nationals????
cheers
rhys
p.s. ill send you a U2U
Are red pontiacs cool for you dave?
Rhys,
I live in hope on the floor sections. I know people have been waiting a LONG time - I used to have basically free out-of-hours access to the press (I
work for goverment defence in aircraft and we had the best workshop). Now that side of things has been contracted out and the new 'owner'
is reluctant to let me use the press at all (liability issues etc I'm not his employee) but has promised to let me do one more run....but I am at
his mercy in terms of when. I hope within the next two weeks....but this will definitely be the last lot...I guess I should make this a general post
in the for sale section...
AND I don't think I'll make the Nationals. I'll be OS returning late on the 23rd of April after a non-stop 2.5 weeks of
round-the-world travel for work (and no you don't get the weekends off). I just may be too knackered to make the Nationals and I haven't
booked accom or anything....

hey rob
no worries maybe i will have to get someone to make me up some !!!! what metal sheeting do you use????
if you give me what i need to tell the pressor (there technical terms) then maybe i could do a run of them and give any profit i make out of it??? (or
even give you free sections!)
cheers
rhys
p.s. have fun on your trip!!
Rhys,
It's not that simple. I doubt any sheet metal fabricator will have a press with the bed length needed to make anything of semi-decent
length....
Then you also need to develop and pay for a simple die etc etc. Then develop a pressing method - ie. I press one corrugation and move, press again -
need a simple alignment device.
A die to stamp a piece in one pressing would be thousands - and then you have to find a press to do it on and then you'd need to press a
thousand and sell em to just recover your money......
I make my floor sections from 1.2mm zinc seal.
They will get done (I don't intend to cop a loss on the metal I've purchased), hopefully before Easter.

I just realised that the nationals are the weekend BEFORE I get back and that I'm working over Easter!

I'm a rocket (research) scientist dave...all that education and very average $$$ - I should have been a brickie!
Rob - does it follow that fabricating sheet metal IS rocket science?
SteveJ - BB
Indeed, by definition it must be!
And where does life and hobby intersect?
