heres a couple of pics of my baja bug.
its a 62 swinger pan with king and link front end.
1600 single port(009, bosch orange gt40 coil, 30 pict 2 solex) (have 1776 to go in but not just yet)
i assume its a 1500 swinger box....could be 1300. has gearbox strap.
31/10.5 dunlop RV majors on the rear on wide stock rims.
195/60 khumos on the front on 14 inch pecos
sports steering wheel, bucket seats from something different (unknown car) with snap on covers.
the design on the doors and bonnet is a mock up i did and then a mate prettyed it up for me (his photoshop skills are better than mine) i had the
stickers made locally for 25 bucks for 3 20cm/20cm on white background.
just dummy fitted my guages under the glovebox. (oil pressure, oil temp, volts, amps) in their brackets.
also has speco tacho and fuel guage.
im in the process of making templates for my new dash which will be 3mm chequer plate. and house the fuel guage, VDO clock and a bunch of switches and
2 big arse oil pressure and genny warning lights to replace the ones in the speedo. ive got pretty much all the bits but the cheuqer plate.
then the kombi lights will go in the nose cone.
after this is all done im rewiring the car. also have everything for this but am waiting on dash and guages to be fitted first to save stuffing
around. my missus's brother in law is an auto electriction so im gonna get him to give me a rating on my work after ive finished rewiring....will be
interesting.
i have wide guards (pictured) which i have just finished painting matt black to go on the rear. these will house my current 60's tail lights and will
also be treated to some pin striping :P
the front guards are going to be pulled off and painted to match when i get around to it.
when the rear guards go on so will the donaldson i have sitting on my shelf and the rear tyres will be switched over onto the rims pictured which i
finished sanding about 20 minutes ago back to bare metal. they will be undercoated tomorrow and painted white. i also have some 4.5 inch stockys to
sand yet and paint up for the front.
the bar i bought from VW nuts will be modifyed a bit for my car before it goes on. ill be cutting the top loop off and welding the peice of flat steel
across the 2 bars where i cut the loop from which will allow for the bug eye lights and a mounting bracket for spotties.
i will be running my current buggy lights as well as the bug eye lights for legalitys.
ancient bugger has then kindly offered to help my jack the rear up a little.
ive got new brakes sitting on the shelf to go in too. and ill be replacing perishable parts in the rear end when the jacking up is done.
ill be ordering new tie rod ends from micks on tuesday when i get paid.
new shocks.....
and then ill be looking for some decent after market racing buckets to put in.
i wonder if ill be happy with it then........
Nick
wicked ride dude, you know i loves the baja... but there's something missing...
...no whale tail?
and there never will be.......and they all lived happily ever after.
wheels in primer today.
broke till tuesday so white paint will have to wait till then.
well done nick
ok well i painted the wheels in septone gloss white today.
not sure if im happy with it. they dont need to be perfect but still.
might still get them blasted and powder coated.
will get some pics soon but u can guess what white wheels look like :P
also picked up a jigsaw for 13 bucks from the warehouse so i can get back onto the door cards.
did rear brakes.
had some issues with stripped axle nut but a trip to northern volks got me a second hand nut for 4 bucks and i was all good again.
some pics i took while doing the first drum.
(no pics of second as i did it in the comet workshop and didnt have the camera handy)
old brakes
new brakes
and here u can see where my tyre has been rubbing. (im running the wrong offset on the rear till i get the new wheels on)

ps: bled brakes a pedal still not completly solid.
brakes slightly better but not enormous improvment.
didnt put the new cylinders in as the old cylinders were tight and not leaking. so ive got 2 spares.
still have to put new flexi lines on but that can wait for another day as i was fed up after doing the brakes lol.

wide guards are on Very Happy
first one went on swimmingly had a couple of dramas trying to get the tail light assembly to bolt to the second one but all sorted now. (the bolt
wasnt long enough ended up having to elongate hole a bit to get the nut to bite and then tighten it pulling the assembly flush.
will get some pics.
new rear wheels to go on tomorrow morning. cant wait.
heres a pretty bad pic with no rear guard.
heres the new guards on
and heres one of the donaldson which will go on when i can be bothered to drill some holes.
PS: i was testing out my camera fone in the dark to see how it would come out.
and heres one to compare to the old guards.
new wheels are on the rear.
had front wheels balanced while i was at it.
i like the height in that pic. might be a bit dodgy with that camber tho. prolly end up a little lower when it gets jacked up.
60's lights are actually growing on me.
went down to barrys and we (well just barry really) jacked up one side 1 spline but even that was too much camber wise so back it went to where it
was
ahh well ive still got ok ground clearance just gotta get the front up to match.
on another note after a decent adjustment of my brakes everything is super tight and ive got the best feel in the pedal ive ever had.
found out the shocks i had didnt have metal sleeves in the bottom mountings and so werent really gonna mount properly so the old shocks went back on.
im gonna order some proper ones from mick motors prolly next week.
barrys cars under the carport and mine in the garage
the man in the know at work.
Where did you get your rear guards from?
bought em second hand from a guy. hes not on this forum (not a fan of computers) people are still making baja kits tho arent they? get in touch with custom offroad they could point u in the direction of a manufacturer.
done a bit of work over the last couple of days nothing major.
bought a stretchy camping clothes line.
drilled some holes in my body.
and used the cord to tie up my brake lines.
finished cutting out my door cards.
pulled my super cheap "rampage" speakers out from the cubourd.
(was hopin they would sound better than they do)
painted the grills white
and then ive painted one black (not worrying about covering them etc as i really dont care about looks and its not a show car)
and the drivers side one is in.
but the bastards have like riveted and then soldered the door opener and the window winder on the passenger side and im having a very difficult time
getting them out. i shall keep at it tomorrow.
finally got the rivets out of the passenger side opener and window winder after much swearing, drilling and hammering.
both cards are in. they arent perfect but i dont care. they are better than the old ones and they match the rest of the car.
heres a really old pic of the drivers side door card and interior.
and just a random pic of my car :P
ps: dont buy supercheap auto speakers.
made an appointment with northern volks to put in my new tie rod ends and do a wheel alignment on tuesday 6th.
also gonna have to get some new torsion rubbers for the rear and whack them in soon
new tie rod ends went on today.
courtesy of northern volks warana.
not sure if i recomend them or not. the guy seemed to give a bit of a bad vibe and possibly got out of bed the wrong side that morning.
made a special effort to close the door to the workshop so i couldnt see what he was doing. and stopped for a good 10 minutes to chat to his wife
/girlfreind during my hours labour i was paying for.
i dont mean to slag them off as as far as i know the guy did an excellent job with the tie rod ends......they havent fallen off yet anyway:P
well my suspicions of northern volks or more directly the fella i dealt with were true.
after telling him that there were 3 old tie rod ends and one new one of about 5 o 6 months i said just replace the 3 old ones.
so he went into his little workshop and shut the door so i couldnt see.
he replaced 3 tie rod ends sure. one of them was the new one (or didnt replace it and just pocketed my new tie rod end) (i bought all 4 but only
needed 3) and left the opld tie rod end that connects to the steering dampner on!!!!!
IM SO CUT. i payed an hours labour for him to rip me off!
will never be going back.
cool man
