giving the square some love..
62deluxe - February 20th, 2006 at 06:40 PM

I thought that after nearly selling the poor old girl I'd better make it feel loved again by giving her some attention. I decided to try out a black roof, a few pressure packs later and ta-da!! One two-tone square.

It will probably get a proper paint /body job over winter so I wanted to try it out first to see if I liked it. I like it.

Excuse the poxy towbar!! It has to earn it's keep!

Looks good!

jo_tas - February 20th, 2006 at 08:52 PM

Looks sweet :) now the rest of the paint needs to be as shiney! Either that, or attack the roof with some sandpaper and salt water :P

62deluxe - February 20th, 2006 at 08:54 PM

The roof matches the other crappy paint better than you think!!
Was thinking of weathering it a bit though.......

jo_tas - February 20th, 2006 at 09:02 PM

your neighbors will think that you must buy REALLY crap paint!! Shiney one week, faded the next!

62deluxe - February 21st, 2006 at 04:28 AM

I could paint it pink and I doubt they'd notice!!

sasquatch - May 20th, 2006 at 04:41 AM

really nice work.... let the paint go!:duh

do you see many squares around? I'm after one the minute I get off the plane!

sets it off looks great.rob.

62deluxe - May 20th, 2006 at 07:19 PM

Don't see any around really. Know of a few but never really see any others on the road. Early ones are even harder to find. I had to go to Melb. to get this one. (off the original owner!)
Since these pics I've cut the roof back and polished the crappers out of it. It's now super shiny and purposely rubbed through in a few spots. Starting on the rest of the body now.
It's gonna be a "shiny rat"

jo_tas - May 20th, 2006 at 08:51 PM

Just like ragtopp's "rat" notch! :P :kiss

Hey that old girls is deserving of lots of love and attention!
Cool bus matey glad you kept her, thought you were moving from the fold when you looked at selling it.

Hey Jo, my Notchy is definetly ratty, thats even being polite in some cases!!:thumb Love it that way though.

June 4 cruise here we come, got a location sorted for some cool pics to mate!!!

Euro_67 - May 21st, 2006 at 08:54 AM

I Love the look, I tried to convince my NON VW mate to buy this when it was for sale, it would have been a bargain. Post some pics of it together with the Split. Its too bad you still dont have the Bay......man what a Trio that would make......!!!!!

Looks magnificent! Great job on the roof. I am going to pressure pack Boris the Rat's side panels to two tone it over winter - any tips on acheiving a reasonable result?

kustomkool - May 21st, 2006 at 12:44 PM

awesome Jeremy, lookin forward to see it on the mainland again.......

62deluxe - May 21st, 2006 at 05:52 PM

Thanks guys!:)
Boris, I rubbed the body back with 900 wet n dry. then wiped it over with degreaser (very important).
I used automotive paint from Supercheap etc in the big cans. I used 4 cans for the roof. I would normally prime it first, but in this case I didn't bother as I wanted to rub it through in a few spots to show the biege underneath. No real secret to the spraying except try to be even and give it good coverage with making runs.
Then the fun begins. Let it harden for a while (a few days at least) then I rubbed it back with 1000 wet n dry until it was glass smooth (here I purposely rubbed through in a few spots) be careful if that's not what you want!!
Then I started with a cutting compound such as t-cut or K&H cutting compound etc. Then I used a normal polish followed by three coats of wax.
It's like glass now. Ask Raggtop.....

Thanks for the tips! Big help. Looking forward to giving it a go! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

62deluxe - May 21st, 2006 at 11:05 PM

That's it. It's not rocket science. Elbow grease is the biggest ingredient.:tu:

ragtopp - May 22nd, 2006 at 06:59 PM

Its like glass alright, its got more shine than most of the turds i been polishing lately!!! You have a great shine finish on it, most people would love a finish like that all over their cars and that came from a spray pack.

62deluxe - May 26th, 2006 at 12:14 AM

No-one wants to know what you get up to in your own time bud!

ragtopp - May 26th, 2006 at 06:54 PM

Mate im a professional Lift Mechanic that means i get payed to polish turds all day, not in my spare time. The only turd polishing done at home is when im polishing the bird turds off my bloody car thanks to parking it at your place.:thumb

jo_tas - May 26th, 2006 at 08:56 PM
