I've just arranged to swap an early model notch ('S' model) for a 40Hp motor I bought 2nd hand. I won't be bringing the notch home
for about a month, but I've been to see the guy today and the deal is done!!!
So is the car for sale?
Thats what this page is for.
Buying, Selling and SWAPPING. I did the swap and just had to tell someone.
Maybe I should have put it in General Chat, Moderators of this section are welcome to move it.
Bummer!
I was just hoping to score a cool notch cheap.
Sounds like you got a deal and a half.
Best of luck with it Col and we might see it on a Cruise soon.:o
Good one Kol:thumb
How's Peewee going? Getting him fixed?

What a deal...
Love your work!

nice work Col
where aer the pics !?!?
:bounce
Sorry all, I haven't been around much lately.
Sorry also to Nathan for the confusion, I should have foreseen that would happen.
I haven't taken any pics as yet, but I will be sure to take some before I pick it up. I want some 'before' and 'after' shots.
Unfortunately I won't be able to pick it up for maybe another 2-3 weeks, until I have the kombi going to tow it with. I'll be picking up
some heads for the kombi when I get to Sydney, I hope.
I'm not planning a full resto on the notch initially; I just want to get it going so I can take the kombi off the road for some paint and stuff.
Once I have the kombi the way I want it, I may do the same on the notch though.
Cant wait to see it Col...
Will be waiting....
you gotta SLAM it though kol like u did to that squareback!!!!!!
cheers
rhys
rhys that square was so low (sitting on the grass literaly) cos there was no suspension in it at all !!
the lowest type 3 ever ! hehehehee
:bounce
great work col.
sounds like a deal to good to be true.
will be waiting for pics too

I've moved the posts, since it is starting to be about the car, rather than the great deal I did.
I took some photos of the notch today. I've had a closer look, and it's a bit rough - to say the least. It does look solid though and I have
a few parts sitting around, so I should be able to get it back on the road without too much expense.
I'll let the photos say the rest.....
.
The motor is a 1500 single port, but I'll be ripping it out and putting in my 1600 DP after a quick tear down to check that it's ok.
Most of the interior looks usable, but new carpets are going to be a necessity.
Very nice Col....
Very Nice indeed!
Is it irs?
looked 4 lug....
the sports wheel looks like a score!
:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb
Great score Kol. Doesnt look that bad, bit of a scrub down and it'l be sweet.
Whats wrong with the motor? Is it a single carb 1500?
Taz, its a swinger, but the IRS is a bolt-in changeover, and I have two of them in my shed.
Dean, the motor evidently dropped its guts before the car was taken off the road. I'll throw my 1600 in and then take a look at the 1500 later.
:thumb
Kol, that looks like you should be able to have her goin in no time. Like it
Steven
Hey Kol
Very sweet notch
So are you changing it to 4 lug?
Yeah, but if anyone knows how to change it back to wide-5 while keeping the IRS, I'm all ears.
looks like a bottle of Exit Mould will bring it up real nice
IRS wide 5 kombi hub's from a 68-69 anygood?maybe they can be adapted
[Edited on 15-4-2003 by silver]
Your rear type3 drums will go onto the IRS no worries, unfortunately an adapter for the front is the only way to go tho dude.
Just remember you'll need to weld in some engine mounts for the engine/'box since the IRS does'nt have frame horns.
Cheers,
Cam
Silver, were't the 68-69 kombi's reduction hub on the back? I saw one at the wreckers with red. hubs on the back... they were definitely
wide 5 though.
Cam, I'm putting a late type 3 IRS in, and probably keeping the front stock. I'm not planning on upgrading the brakes at this stage, so the
front drums can stay. From what I gather so far, I can use the wide 5 drums on the IRS hubs, correct?
I'm planning on using the rear mounts from a late type 3, in addition to the single rear mount from the early, and the bellhousing and nosecone
mounts. I'd like to use framehorns as well, but I'm not sure if I'll be able too yet.
Hey Colin,
Looks good, I didn't know you were so keen on notches.
I did the late floor pan convertion on my 65 notch, then decided to convert it back to 5 lug brakes to keep its 65 looks.
Only problem I came against was the master cylinder the later being a lot better.
OL formally t3nut
Ol, you must have forgotten that I was looking at notches before the wife decided she wanted a bug. You can't remember me drooling over yours?
I was going to change the whole pan over, but then it would get registered as a '73, and I definitely want it registered as a 60's model
(still don't know what it is yet). As the whole rear end just unbolts, I don't see any advantage in changing the whole pan anyway. Looks
like I'll end up with origianl everything except the rear suspension assembly. :thumb
Nope, they should just go straight onto your axle at the back. Easy! The splines are longer in the type 3 5 stud rear drums, so should work on IRS no
problems, unlike beetle 5 stud drums which have shorter splines.
I'd just cut out the later engine mounts and weld them in, easiest fix. I've done it myself and as long as you've got welding down
should just be a matter of measurements.
I did however have my rear apron off since it's buckled and also gave me a chance to rust kill inside the bellows.
There was a post on shoptalkforums.com awhille back by a dude who'd cut off the horns of his swingaxle subframe and welded them too the IRS one.
He said it was far easier than welding brackets to the swingaxle unit (which he'd also done) But if I remeber he was using a BIG motor and trick
suspension, I can't see you needing anything more than the stock mounts unless you were going the same route.
Thanks CAm, that's the kinda info I needed. :thumb
I've had a late type 3 rip its engine mounts out, and the rear mount in the notch has obviously been re-welded for the same reason. I'm not
planning a monster motor (yet), but I would like the mounts to actually support the motor, not just sit there for looks. I'm hoping that doubling
up on mounts will provide me with better support.
